  1. Sold our lovely boat Compass Rose in 2019, due to family circumstances that looked like not much cruising ahead. Bought a motorhome with the proceeds, on the basis it's more flexible. Had a fantastic time, still going strong, spending months down in Cornwall and loving it. But, so regretted selling the boat. We'd made it our own unique space. I hope the new owners are getting as much fun as we had out of the idiosyncrasies of the toilet. Never failed to amuse us. We've just bought our next boat and I'm delighted. Just sorting out the kit now, and then we'll be off to cruise the whole way round again. Vaguely hoping to pass our old boat and wave but no idea where she's gone. This will be the last time round for us so going to appreciate it all the more.

  13. I was extremely fortunate recently to come across a cabin stool in a local vintage store, especially as it was painted by Frank Nurser of Braunston. It’s a most welcome addition to my collection of historic ware. As many will know, Nurser enjoyed a fine reputation and his work is very collectible.

  23. More on the Westfield lock. This was the work party 2 weeks ago. I was back there today but unfortunately there’s been an access issue so no further digging has been done https://youtu.be/yaXbg4UZpl8

  25. I will confess I've never taken a boat through Thorne lock, hence I didn't reference it directly. Nonetheless I've taken oversized boats through other locks on the system and it struck me that the published craft dimensions do not absolutely preclude the passage of a 70' boat through the lock; plus given one forum member says they've done it the obvious conclusion is that it is possible. Of course it doesn't mean every 70' boat will fit, and as has been pointed out it's not a lot of fun going boating if you have to fight with every lock. The odd one is fun though.

  34. Another of theirs, the Craven Arms in Gough Street (behind The Mailbox) is worth a visit in the city centre. With the demise of The Woodman it has become my go-to place for a quiet pint before/after an afternoon of disappointment & disillusionment at Villa Park.

  35. One day songs of diesel romance will be sung by people looking to wind back the clock. Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end... a Mary Hopkin sort of song. Once upon a time there was an engine, where we used to burn a gallon or two... Being able to burn the burny burny things with gay abandon and the wonderful freedom to consume will be lamented very badly by those who experienced the real liberation of go juice and gradually had it taken away from them under the pretence of saving an already doomed planet. It will be a song of immense joy, tinged with awful sadness which is ultimately insurmountable even by very powerful electric motors. It just ain't the same.

  37. It is a nice quiet place to stop, sail through 2 lift bridges to Whixall Marina for diesel etc and then return to moor up on piling pins.

  39. Yes, and if it works then this thread was unnecessary. I can't see the point of all the speculation - just get on with it and fit the board. If it doesn't work then there's a different conversation to have with the repairer

  45. The lock’s often manned quite regularly with Volunteers. Maybe you should go and ask the lock keepers and see what reaction you get, as others have done when passing through. I honestly don’t know why you come on here, as you don’t offer any real advice which is current and when your put right, like telling you 70ft boats could use Goole & Selby, you start being contentious gordding for arguments, same as the majority of Threads you go on. Why not just stick to Caravan Forums where your knowledge could be helpful and informative and your posts more constructive?

  46. I virtually never use cash, it’s a pain. Last year someone gave me a couple of 100 in cash for services rendered, it took 1/2 a year to get around to spending it. Cash at the gliding club (where I’m treasurer) is a right pain, one of us has to go to the bank to pay it in, whereas if they use the Sumup machine it is 1.6% which is not too bad. Or of course bank transfer is better, but there are a few who say “Oh I DON’T do internet banking, it’s not safe.”. Presumably they pay for the tin foil for their hats in cash.

  47. i think we are going to have to get wind turbines fitted so we dont use the fossil fuel power stations to get electric to propel boats tbh... or the world will be covered in turbines.. either way.. its gonna cost until we can generate our own power onboard without having to use electric stations to recharge.... has said.. during the winter months, solar panels arnt has effective.. but there will always be wind
