  7. Some years ago I went into a craft shop for some materials I needed for a project. I mooched around the shop but couldn't find what I wanted so I went up to an 'assistant' and asked : "can you tell me where I can get felt ?" I was ejected from the shop !!

  19. I don't wish to hijack the thread but I do feel I ought to stand up on behalf of us poor beleaguered good tenants. I had to move 8 in times in 15 years due to short tenancies and ended up having to settle in the only long term tenancy I could find which involved living with a 50 year old fuse box, a leaking roof and no heating. I managed to land a housing association property with an assured tenancy and finally felt safe for the first time in 8 years. It's not the same as having my own house which as I mentioned I also had once - but it's a world away from the hell of private rentals - which as far as I'm concerned should be for students and pre-marital couples only. No human can achieve anything in life without secure housing and adequate food. Anything any government can do to ensure healthy and stable living conditions for it's citizens is fine by me.

  21. It's been suggested to rent out the house rather than sell it. I'd caution against this. We live in times where buy to let landlords are seen as the lowest of the low. The current government has already legislated in several ways to reduce the profitability of renting out houses. Expect the future to include such things as mandatory costly registration schemes, forced expensive upgrades to meet 'green' targets. Also likely are a further boost of tenant's rights vs those of a landlord. Corbyn has already hinted at the possibility of 'right to buy' at discounts by established tenants. I foresee higher rates of capital gains tax for those selling buy to let properties. I speak as the owner of 3 houses that I rent out. One is on the market, another will go up for sale in the next financial year.

  24. I haven't tried this but I'm fairly sure that a duck, if offered a slice of bread and a lettuce leaf, would choose the bread. Even if you showed him the link that said the lettuce was more nourishing for ducks. Mebbe Dr Bob could try this experiment and post up the results?

  26. The thing is, when you are running your engine 8 hours at the weekend and annoying the feck out of everyone witin 100 yards, us lithium users simply don't need to. Our batts charge in less than half the time yours do, and never need fully charging anyway. Less noise, less annoying your neighbours, less fuel, less engine wear, less servicing. That is the beginning and the end of why lithiums are good thing, really.

  34. The 4 counties ring is a good one for 10days. It has a mix of industrial areas and nice countryside. A minor diversion will take you to Wightwick Manor a beautiful arts and crafts house on the edge of Wolverhampton. Plenty of hire bases on the ring - Napton Narrowboats at Autherley, Black Prince at Stole, Anglo Welsh at Great Haywood, Andersen Boats at Middlewich are a few to consider. An alternative would be to hire at Great Hayood and do the the full length of the Staffs and Worcester canal with the Severn Valley Railway at Kidderminster plus Wightwick Manor. If you hired from Autherley you could go down to Stourport and then back to base via Stourbridge and the Black country museum. Other people will come up with different ideas - relax and enjoy looking at the options.

  46. I'd be a bit surprised if CRT have had any involvement, let alone threatened to impose fines on behalf of the farmer. This looks more like a poorly written, self-generated letter as a first low-cost attempt to clear the moorings.

  47. I posted it within a few weeks of it happening, essentially because I told Steve afterwards in a “conversation” when I found him moored downstream later that afternoon, that he would be able to find the evidence on YouTube. I got the feeling he thought I was bluffing and that I didn’t have any footage of the actual ram. He was so belligerent and pretty much dared me to post it. I’d have filmed that conversation too however he demanded I switch my phone completely off before he said anything so I couldn’t record him. It would have made great listening! The video sat largely unnoticed with a couple of hundred hits until this week when all hell broke loose, and as of this morning it was up to around 14,000! I don’t regret posting it after all that has happened. I think that he needed exposing as the hypocrite and bully that he is. I’m just glad we were filming. It was only done to be part of a holiday video. Always try to film us mooring just in case we nail a perfect one! Lol. And we’ve all been in that position eh? Looking for a mooring and you see that someone else has their eye on it. In his shoes I would have shrugged and moved on. You can hear that we slow down to approach it, not speed up as he asserts at the end, so I really don’t see how we could be seen to do anything wrong. He just got the hump because a lowly hire boat slipped in there first and decided to administer his own type of retribution. Film doesn’t lie tho (and it wasn’t a wide angle lens!)
