Replacement Chimney

I've had a chimney made for G&F by Chris Smith -( he's based at crick 01733 576946)

Made in 304 stainless steel, with a stainless liner, - made to fit, and at the length I wanted.

Chris makes the chimneys 'in situ' - and he will charge for fuel (for his van/workshop) as an extra - but if you can get another one or two near you to order as well, it'll be a shared cost

Chris made a perfect job - and the chimney has certainly improved the performance of our stove.

(I have no connection with this business other than as a satisfied customer etc)

Sorry about the size of pic, couldn't adjust it..saw this on ebay £60 buy it now ? any good or not I don't know, although there's a similar one on my boat which I really like...

That is (despite the price!) a very basic rolled chimney, which looks like it is jointed at the side just by folding, rather than proper copper rivets.

Despite a (usually) alleged galvanised steel construction, once used in anger they only last a few years before they start falling to bits, unfortunately.

The proper thing is made of much sterner stuff, but is quite a specialist item, usually made to fit. Also it may have much heavier brass for the bands, and often a proper bead around the top, rather than just a pressed shape. The price will usually reflect this, though!

I think Alan Fincher is being extremely helpful - (and very diplomatic)

If you want a decent chimney, get one made to fit your boat by one of the above mentioned companies.

Mine was made, in stainless steel, three years ago, and it's still in perfect condition despite being constantly used all winter(s)

If there's anyone around Oxford way, I can recommend the guy who made my chimney to fit my oddly shaped flue outlet, and very reasonably. He also makes decorative ones in weird and wonderful shapes! PM me for his number, as I am not sure if he would want it posted on the forum.

Ok ta I'll check Uxbridge BC first as it's near the mooring.

Ta NB Blue Belle - appreciate the link but that's the type I'm trying to avoid. When you see them in person they are truly far eastern cheap and nasty. They disintegrate into rotten stumps after a time.

It's not so much what they look like, more the quality of the inner lining, filler and making sure they don't suffer from condensation and drip black gunge down the side of you boat.....

The hand made ones and exhaust pipes (pictured) look excellent.

If you want a really nice one try the section of canal in the Tring cutting towards Cowroast just up from the GU Arms - motto - never let your wife clean the brass bands as you go along, fortunately she had removed the gas mask type chain........

We have got one of Michael's, in fact I think it is the second one he sold (after Mikey's) and it has proved marvellous however aethsthetically I think Andy's on the Dove are superior. it is just a matter of taste I think and of course where on the system you are. Michael's are far cheaper I think although perhaps not any more :) looking at those pictures.

Stainless steel every time for me.

The initial outlay may be more but, not necessarily.

Chap in our marina paid £55 for a tin type whilst another chap had a stainless one made to measure in the local blacksmith/fabricator for £70.

They well outlast the tin type that you see in chandlers. Mine is over 10yrs old now and the steel is solid....and we have our stove quite hot.
