Security risk to close London canal

I reckon they'll close it to navigation, yes, probably up to Tottenham Lock. I'm planning to be boating up North again when the games are on.

I lived in Greenwich when the Millenium parties happened and it was a nightmare, we residents were not allowed to leave our homes or drive around from 1pm on New Years Eve.

If you live in Birmingham, where the Hyatt, which is linked to the Convention Centre; overlooks Gas St then you soon get used to silly security measures. We've had three years of party conferences.

I bought someone a pint once after her husband told me that when they'd cruised through the barricade, under armed escort, she'd demanded the policemen take their boots off. Never mind the bomb threat; muddy boots are anathema :o

edit.... the explosives dogs were allowed free reign...

It's good to see standards are being kept up. At all times. Shows backbone.

Jetskis are not permitted up the thames due to ' Security Risk ' we will get stopped if we try going any further than Dartford crossing, A group of us ( about 25 skis ) wanted to do a charity run last year but was refused point blank ! We ended up skiing to france one weekend and around the isle of wight next week and raised over £2500 for charity :)

Well, there's money well spent.

'Possibility of a bomb threat from a moored boat,' give me strength! A bomb could be delivered to the Olympics by many different methods in many different forms. If they want to be utterly safe they may as well cancel the bloody event. If you're going to let terror win, why drag out the affair?

And how does this affect the contract that BW have just let for passenger trip boats from Limehouse to Old Ford, specifically for ticket holders?

I have cycled and boated past the site in the last few days, the security fence is impressive, in a way that such things are. I'll try and post a photo later

BTW, boat traffic past the site is being "managed" not just for security but because BW fear a free for all of boats trying to moor for the olympics. BW, at the last count were optimistic that a deal could be secured whereby booked passage from the Lee to the Regents via the Hertford Union was available. I suspect you'll be hearing the words "booked passage" and "reserved moorings" a lot

A few years ago I was in a meeting about above mentioned trip boat, and the view of one police officer was that it was too much of a security risk. His superior said that therein lay the road to perdition, and if the police were that negative then the answer would be to hold the games in empty stadia and people could watch on telly at home.

You could get arrested for attempting to photograph the security precautions!

Not just the Olympics - I was accosted by a security whilst taking pictures of Fulbourne boating on the Kennet through the Oracle centre in Reading, he kindly said that I could keep the pictures that I had taken although I wasn't to take any more

Before I start a rant, are you American or do you just live there?

That's a good excuse, save us a lot of embarrassment when we cock everything up

Terrorists don't need to plant bombs to cause disruption to life in the UK.

So true.

And soon the whole country will be gridlocked and gripped by fear of that old enemy dropped on us from above... I don't want to cause widespread panic but i'm afraid the centimetre of snow is enevitable at some stage.

We must be on our guard... :)

Edit: Can't spull!

This thing is nothing new. Its absolutely old hat and it has always been the intent of the police/security to close the Lee Navigation during August and September 2012, as detailed as such in many Olympic documents right from the very beginning when the Olympics were first drawn up and it has been discussed by the LWC from time to time.

If that's the case, and it may well be true, why was BW operating under the apparent assumption that the canal would be open. Why spend millions of pounds on a stretch of waterway that will be closed?

I think I'd be questioning their right to say that. In Court, if necessary.
