Les it is generally endemic in our culture that we put fish back after we finish fishing. It is not so in Eastern European cultures. So there is a fairly obvious connection. EE national also catch and eat Swans and ducks there is news evidence to support this.

But it is the water we want them to put back!

Well I don't put fish back when I finish fishing. I knock 'em on the head and take them home for the freezer. The majority of fly and sea anglers do. The local shootists used to regularly drop off a couple of rabbits, pheasant or duck at the mooring too. All legally obtained, of course, but a lot of it isn't.

I've also ate carp and swan in Europe (both very tasty) the carp lives in the bath for a couple of days to get rid of the pond taste, apparently, not exactly fast food which is probably why our fine poachers reserve their activities for game fish.

Since I finished coarse fishing I do the same as carl and fish caught in the sea or trout from the rivers or pools are knocked on the head and taken home for the freezer/oven. Cant beat a nice Bass fresh from the sea bakedwith a bit of butter.

And if Brits liked the taste and it isn't enforced then Brit low-life would be doing it too.

Making generalised racist comments like "pikie scum" isn't helpful. The only reason the British poacher takes a chance with the lord of the manor's trout is becausethe British poacher likes the taste. And electro-fishing, netting and dynamiting is happening at a trout pool near you and by a Dingle, not a Pole.

Wolves fans are poaching trout and salmon???*

Will only make sense to a fellow black countryman with an interest in football.

Whats needed is a local rozzer who is a keen angler. I used to know a copper down in Thamesmead who was 5 times Met police champion. When the rest of the shift were in Woolwich town centre scuffling with the natives where was he?.....down by birchmere lake checking the night fishermen for licences and 'nickin' the non conformists. Used to drive his young operators mad when all they wanted was a bit of action and not a collection of rods and tackle to book into the property store

Polish immigrants eh.. I don't suppose any of you have any evidence or anything boring like that..

Never mind, who else could it be anyway and we all know that them north Europeans eat a lot of fish, let's organise a vigilante group, make sure you bring a couple of mooring ropes, I'll find a suitable tree.

Gud on ya John I'm up for a bit of hanging. Rumour has it a couple of eskimo's were spotted around that area

Of course, that was the original purpose of the guillotine locks.

And I tell you what......Stamp End has rusted wire holding the guillotine up. There is rope in the middle which is supposed??? to support it if a cable snaps.

Now I was told by someone that the rope in the middle would be rotted, so if a cable did break it could drop.

However I think for both to break at the same time is highly unlikely

However 1 boat or 2 (halves) anyone..........

Poland is actually Central Europe not Northern Europe just to give you a geography lesson. It's most Northerly latitude is 52N......... about the same as Luton.

Have they got any small scale canals in Poland? It could be they think our locks are very nicely designed fish traps, which of course they are but thats not their primary purpose but they might not know. When will they realise that the canals provide a rent free living area the penny must drop sometime?

Indeed Chris. Not quite the same thing but I am minded of the expression "Eastern Europe" which was a political, not a geographical distinction, dating from the old Iron Curtain communist days.

I had a friend some years back, a political refugee in the UK from Prague in what was then communist Czechoslovakia. Whenever he was described as being from Eastern Europe he used to point out that Prague is actually further west than Vienna which was in what was known as Western Europe, meaning not geography but the non commie part. Both the Czech Republic and Austria are probably best described these days as Central Europe, which is the locational definition my friend preferred back then, but such expressions are rarely precise. Oddly perhaps, the east west distinction created by the Iron Curtain was much more precise than a geo. east west distinction.

These things are often relative. It's likely that Greeks, say, view Britain Germany and Poland as Northern Europe, notwithstanding that you can go even further north into Scandi.

On that basis Steve (relative to a large part of the UK) Poland is Southern Europe!!

It's a cultural thing too. The lively Mediterranean temperament is at odds with that of Northern Europeans. It's the climate so I would refer to Greeks, Croatians and Italians for example as Southern Europeans. I'd say Britain Germany Poland and Scandi etc. are Northern by this measure.

France interestingly is both, having both southern and northern aspects.

But where is the dividing line? Where you can run around in a tee shirt in say February. Which places Newcastle upon Tyne firmly around Corfu.

Steve

Well said John, and when our Grandfathers were around it would have been them and other foriegn Nationals who were blamed for every bit of local criminal activity.

There are a lot of Polish people in the town near us and most of them are more polite and pleasant than many of the locals, but everytime there is any unexplained criminal activity, some loudmouthed ignoramous blames it on the Poles.

Predjudice is an evil and debasing thing. I know, I have been on the wrong end of it many times in the past.

Good English sounding name you have there Sir :D Its true that over the years a lot has changed since the Days of Enoch Powel towards racism etc and as a country we were very close to being a multicultural happy society.

However many, many, many people are now changing their views on this so called image of harmony. The recent influx over the past few years of kosovans, romanians, poles, etc etc. are fast tipping the scales. It is now beleived that Birmingham has more (hang on I have to be careful to be politically correct for fear of offending someone in my own country) black people living in it than white. Just one of many cities throughout Britain.

If its ignorant and loudmouthed for an Englishman to voice ones opinions in this country these days then it truly is a sad reflection on our times.

I am not afraid to stand up and say that I do beleive that this country is wrong to let so many immigrants into it. There are more than enough. I use no bad language or name calling in this statement it is just one mans views. If those views make me a racist then I am more than happy to be labelled one.

You could always do what my friend did and move to Spain.

Oh.

Edited to add: People have been moaning about immigrants in the UK since the beginning of time, it's used to be 'bloody Romans', or 'bloody Vikings,' then in more recent times, 'bloody jews', it will probably continue. In another thirty years we'll have got over the latest influx and us and (by then), the long settled Polish community will be whinging about the 'bloody martians' or something.

And that's right??

The one good thing about Sarkozy is that his policies are so mad that there will be a general strike, he'll be kicked out and France will go back to what it's good at...Socialism.
