MtB
After failing to open the gates, did this chap moor up and wait? Or turn around and cruise back from whence he came?

That’s essentially the same thing that you suggested in the first place. Think of an empty lock chamber and a long pound full of water above it. Open the top paddles and you have a real life example of the theoretical model that Stegra describes. The flow ceases when the surface levels are the same but the volume of water will still be very much greater in the pound above than in the lock chamber. Conversely, rivers don’t flow from the ocean to mountain lakes. JP

I'm not sure that flood gates are sufficiently different for 25(a) not to apply. But is it a flash lock? Or are they "flood gates"? A flash lock would have a reliable method of opening it against a significant level difference. Or does the difference lie only in the intended use? And that is exactly the point: it is the difference in water height that creates the pressure which, if unrestrained will lead to the water 'finding its own level' but when restrained exterts a force on the restraint. Of course, moving water is a very different matter.

When you open the top gates on a lock, the additional volume of water from the pound doesn't increase the pressure on the closed gates. Likewise, if you dive down 3 metres in a (saltwater) swimming pool the pressure is the same as if you dive down 3 metres in the middle of the Atlantic. You're spot on there MtB. Of course when it comes to something like marriage which everybody else seems to succeed at, you do wonder about yourself. The reasons for failure were different'ish. Wife 1 died from eating poisonous mushrooms Wife 2 also died from eating poisonous mushrooms Wife 3 suffered a broken neck when she wouldn't eat her poisonous mushrooms. 1 1
