  1. Well off topic. Removal of the right breast has always confused me because as an archer myself I know that for a right handed archer at full draw, the string passes over the left hand side of the chest not the right and right handed women wear chest guards on the left. More information than you need. I once shot outdoors on a hot summer day without a shirt on and almost gave myself a nipplectomy when I was not standing correctly, this was my left hand one being right handed.

Most likely a coupling of erosion and corrosion, the erosion removes the corrosion products which normally act as a bit of a barrier slowing down corrosion, revealing fresh steel to rapidly corrode. Seen it a lot in the chemical industry in pumps and high velocity / turbulent pipework if there are solids in the fluid.
  3. The width of the flow path is reduced so the velocity of the water is higher, so it is more turbulent and thus has a better capability to transfer heat from the water to the hull (heat transfer coefficient), which further increases the performance of the tank.

  6. You would probably need to make two flats on it as a baseball bat is about 2.5 inches diameter, too large to fit into the nominal 2 x 3 slots. Also, as noted above it could wobble side to side so risking skinning knuckles on the gear rack when raised. It would be more of a stop gap rather than something I would use as a long term C&H boater.

  9. The trouble is that over the years the pinions that the handspike slots into have worn on the slots sizes are not uniform. Also some of the replacements being sand cast have slightly distorted holes. I have been based on the C&H for 12 years and the only way to ensure they go in to the right depth is to fit a stop block on your spike.
  10. I paid for a car using my debit card, that all went OK but the dealer had to get the bank to authorise it with me completing the usual security questions. The fuel tank was on the red light. So a few minutes down the road I stopped at the first petrol station and filled up. When I got to the kiosk to pay my card would not work, the bank had blocked the card due to unusual activity despite going through telephone verification. Luckily, the credit card still worked. Be careful out there, nothing is far too sensible for the banks to mess up.

And not only the very complex and specific charge profile, which is not available on most alternator, mains chargers or solar controllers, do these batteries have the same intolerance to under charging as standard AGM batteries. If so, that is a lot of battery cost to quickly kill if not on shore power , or long engine / generator hours to get them charged to 100% SOC. Other than lithium, the only version of lead acid that claims to deal with this partial SOC operation is lead carbon which claims to be tolerant of not being fully recharged, and specifically sold for renewal energy storage where full recharge is not always possible. However, their cycle life is still impacted. Trojan are now offering lead carbon FLA versions for solar so the technology does appear to have some backing from a reputable deep cycle battery maker. Trojan lead carbon The trouble is we all remember Elecsol and carbon, although from memory, that was a different type of carbon enhancement.

Someone is making a killing on the fuel, the website states that these are direct methanol fuel cells and the fuel is M10, another site lists it as a methanol/ water mixture and I would guess M10 means 10% methanol, so in the 20 litres for £100 you get 2 litres methanol and 18 litres water. Methanol bulk cost is perhaps £300/ tonne or just under 30p/litre. You can buy 10 litres of pure methanol for about £40, which gives the sort of mark up fot bottling smaller amounts. Fuel cells should be relatively fuel efficient, no worse than a gennie and hence cost the same to run. Methanol can hardly be described as a green fuel, I used to design methanol production plants making methanol from natural gas and you use a lot of money to essentially degrade the calorific value of the natural gas, it is after all the same molecule as methane with one added oxygen atom, hence it is partially combusted methane.

It is usually the large black or red handled switch that turns the battery power off to all the users in the boat such as lights, pumps, fridges, toilets, etc. 5 amp seems OK for a water pump so the pump does not appear to be taking too much power. The pump often runs on after the tap is closed as it repressurises the accumulator. But if the charger is on the battery side of the master switch then it will not see a voltage drop so will not cover this.

Depend also on the voltage of the panels, some 250W panels have a max power voltage of around 30V so they have a lot of headroom over the charging voltage, some of the 100W panel have max power voltage of 18V so there may be an advantage to series such panels. In the OP's case going in series will not increase the current so will not need to change the wires from the roof to the controller if these are an issue re voltage drop as could be the case for parallel.
  15. The info from this supplier does not seem to show a rapid voltage drop off even under high discharge rates until well below 50% SOC and the open cell voltage vs SOC also looks OK. The info still says they should be charged fully every cycle. Interesting, but still not sure about putting money at risk as they are 3 times more expensive than basic cheap leisure batteries.   16. The main thrust of this under charging which will trash AGM batteries quickly, so if in any doubt about charging effectiveness, then you may as well trash cheap batteries. I am needing to change my batteries (4 x std 110Ah) this winter after 3 1/2 years leisure use using cheap sealed leisure batteries and was looking at AGM, still can not make my mind up. I did wonder about some Numax XDT30MF as these use tubular cells but not AGM, the MF usually signifies maintenance free but they do appear to have caps. The other advantage is the use of standard leisure battery size. The desire for more cycles is because I am now retired and will use the boat more, I am pretty pleased about getting 4 seasons out of cheap batteries.
  17. It was moored in Granary Wharf Leeds when I was there in January and had moved slightly back towards Liverpool when I passed through again in June, although the boat itself had grown in those 6 months. A moorhen was nesting on it in June.
  18. By dissolving carbon dioxide in water. Carbon dioxide in an enclosed space (such as a boat cabin) is dangerous as it is an asphixiant.

Herein one of the issues, if the CO alarm is for protection against CO generated by fuel burning appliances within the cabin, you need to locate them at high level as the hot combustion products rise, however, for CO from adjacent boats you may well need them at low level as the CO containing air may well be entering as cold air through door vents and staying low, until the incoming air is heated.

  21. Not quite right, a 40degC temp difference through 6mm steel will transfer 35kW through 1 sq.ft., you have dropped a factor of 10 in your calc. In this type of heat transfer the conduction through the metal separator is usually insignificant to the convective heat transfer resistance between the fluid and the metal as has been pointed out elsewhere. (56 x 40 / 0.006 / 3.281 / 3.281 = 34680 W)
  22. Those solar panels do not look large enough to be 2 x 250W.
  23. Tricky Stick (click here) is some sort of priming solvent that helps superglues stick to difficult plastics such as silicone rubber, polyethylene, I have used it successfully with these. No idea if it could be used prior to painting.
  24. As this is the domestic batteries could you be seeing a large voltage difference between the engine and domestic batteries and the warning light is the one cross connection, does the solar push the domestic voltage higher than the alternator foes, which would explain this happening now. On my Barrus shire the domestic warning light provides a cross over but looking at the wiring diagram it has diodes in the domestic alternator D+ wire to prevent a higher voltage on D+ from flowing to the engine battery.
