  11. Oh please don’t talk sense it doesn’t suit the narrative of many of the posters on this forum!

  15. Instant gas water heaters are brilliant. You don't have to run the engine and piss off all the boats moored nearby to get hot water. And despite what people imagine, they only sip the gas. Probably way cheaper on fuel than heating water by running the diesel engine.

  22. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has responded to my queries - so helpful and very much appreciated. We're off tomorrow and have decided to go to Chirk, Montgomery and onward, finishing up with Llangollen as @IanD suggested. When we plotted it out it made a lot of sense and felt right... Looking forward to it - let's hope it all works out!

  28. Alan, please look into the difference between timeshare and shareboat - they are different, in important ways. I am sure you just made a slip and didn't fully read the posts, though. Share boating makes a LOT of sense if you want to do more than just occasionally hiring, but you can't see yourself using a boat for more than 4 weeks/year - for example if you work full time, and don't have the holiday allowance. But beware of comparing their costs to other boats, they get absolutely hammered (more than hire boats) and their life is like "dog years" for things like engine replacements, repaint, etc. An older shareboat is likely to be like trigger's broom, re-engined and re-painted and most of the important components on their 2nd or 3rd iteration.

  32. Depends what you mean. I carried 2, an 8’ long ash cabin shaft fitted with a boat hook and a 16’ long shaft with no hook, again ash, both used to help manouvering, mooring etc. Most Chandlers will stock the shorter, Brinklow Boat Services usually have the longer option.

  44. 🤷‍♂️ Oh, all right then - I told myself to ignore it, but it's the narrowest narrowboat I've ever seen, with very mean top planks, with no chimney but with a porthole in the bedhole space, no towing mast and a very odd T-stud - though the whole front deck is rather strange. 🤷‍♂️ Authors don't often get much of a say about the cover design, but I'd be ashamed if it was my book purporting to be a history of boat life. 45. Ours is in a cupboard, has been for 25 years. Its a large cupboard, I dont know about the square footage but its around 6 foot high going back 4 foot at the bottom and 2 foot at the top where the Paloma heater is. Its around 2 foot wide. There is a vent /chimney going through the roof. It has bikes and washing stuff in the cupboard too . There are two large decorative holes in the cupboard door for ventilation which arent ever covered. Never failed a BSS yet.

  48. I actually think this would suit me battered and bruised, seen better days, rough around the edges and , if it doesn't get some tender care soon, might be on its way out.
