  4. Yes we'll probably find it is something like signal crayfish they are trying to protect.

  5. It displays to three decimal places of amps/hour, so it is much more accurate than a Smartgauge.

  13. If there are Otters there should we not be encouraging them so that they displace the invasive Mink?

  18. The otter isn't in this picture but this is were you can find him. The Telford Street swing bridge is behind me and I'm standing on Canal road side path as I take the photo. The otter pops in and out of pipe work in the wall on the left hand side of the photo and at the end of the wall is a really old set of steps that you can watch him scamper up and then he just scrambles along the grassy bits of the towpath till he's passed all the lock and he slides back into the water at his leisure - he does not give a jot for the people who may be there on the path and does not seem at all bothered by noise or busy goings on.

  20. Clap? Is clapping an otter some sort of obscure English folk game, a bit like cheese rolling?

  21. The point is they are a natural part of our UK ecosystem and so the damage they will do long term is next to nil. UK wildlife have evolved to fit into their niche and live alongside their predators. Unlike alien species such as Mink they do not have a niche and the wildlife haven't evolved to cope with them.

  22. As a fisherman I understand that and do understand if a fishery needs to fence off their investment, just don't blame the otter, give any predator an over stocked puddle stuffed full of lethargic well fed fish and bad stuff will happen

  23. It is a commercial business and as such has to take precautions, just as when we were in the jewellery trade we spent a lot on burglar alarms, CCTV, special windows etc. It isn't the Otters fault that they have managed to recover from persecution and pollution. The fence is just one of his costs of doing business just like our security was for us. He will factor it into his charges.

  25. Two thoughts. First aren't all mink in the UK "American" (i.e. of that species). Second I would agree it is more likely to be to do with fish stocks but it is seen as better PR to say "small wildlife" than they are eating our fish.

  27. Nooooooo, we need to start a protest, who wants to go and live up a tree so they can't start work. Just another thought, do you think they need to fix the leak first? It is hard to walk to the boat without wanting to go to the loo because of the trickling water sound. C&RT assure me it isn't a problem and that I won't wake up in the reservoir one night. Cheers Graham

  29. And their loss of money is only going to get worse as they can't possibly charge a navigation fee now. Even if the broken bridges do get fixed no one will pay a navigation fee in the knowledge that, probably within a few years, they'd be limited in their movement. Having only had my boat a year (next month) I'm pretty disgusted.

  33. For wide locks I don't mind them. We have the Calcutt three to do every time we go anywhere. At least they give a very predictable flow to pin a single boat against the wall going up if you start off with only the one on the same side of the boat. Not all wide locks are so single-boat-friendly. I certainly prefer them to those at Braunston and the GU South.

  35. This is either stupidity of the highest order or there is a specific protected species that needs protection whilst breeding and the fence is temporary

  38. That's known as complacency, or familiarity breeding contempt. In locks you should have one eye for the boat and one for yourself. Leave the washing machine out of the equation. (Don't run it off the batteries either, unless you enjoy buying batteries!)

  39. Unexpectedly popping out and shutting off the gas when bottles not exhausted (can be caused by under-sized regulator). Users not realising it is there (and popped out) in the first place. The thing developing a fault and refusing to stay IN on a freezing cold night when slashing with rain and you NEED a hot meal....

  40. The Napton & Warwick canal is very rural as far as Leamington. A good destination would be the Saltisford Arm where you can moor (for a small fee to the canal trust) and be in walking distance of Warwick town centre and the castle. Leamington's moorings aren't the best. That should be well within the bounds of eight leisurely days. The locks are quite hard work on the widened GU but in July you will probably end up sharing with another boat. JP

  41. I think that you can or could get a water sensor bowl for the CAV agglmerator/sedimentor range. I suspect a sedimentor can be had for about half the Fuelguard price but without the marketing budget. To the OP - if your fuel filler is the stupid male cap into a female threaded pipe please change the O ring, treat with suitable grease (depends upon the O ring materiel) a, keep tight, and change the ring every year or so. Although very popular amongst the boat building fraternity they do let water into the tank. Much better the less aesthetic male threaded pipe upstand with a BSP cap on the end.

  42. We used to have horses rather than engines. We can now have a bow thruster instead of a crew member and a long shaft. Nowt to get sniffy about, they're not yet compulsory Rog
