  2. Some "old school / hardliners" leave gates open south of (about) Berkhamsted, arguing that much of it is river fed, and water shortage is seldom an issue. BW/CRT request that you shut all paddles and gates, except where signs say to the contrary, (an increasing number of locks on the Cow Roast to, [at least] Watford stretch now have signs saying to leave them empty with a paddle drawn). I'm of the persuasion you should do what BW/CRT tell you to do, because if you take the "old school / hardliners" approach you piss off lots of people who don't understand you reasons for not doing what BW/CRT tell you to do. No doubt I piss off the "old school / hardliners", so lets face it, you can't win, even if you do what you are told!

  15. But these artworks you disparage, consisting of nothing more than piled-up rubbish, are the product of your own (sadly limited) imagination. You have no idea what the eventual sculptures will look like. It could be this, or this, or goodness knows what. Human creativity is a wonderful thing. Just because they're using a pile of junk, doesn't mean it has to look like a pile of junk - any more than a stone sculpture has to look like a lump of rock or a painting has to look like some splodges of paint.

  16. You learn something every day. Maybe it's because we're up North, but I've never heard any suggestion that you shouldn't close lock gates after you - unless you can see a boat approaching from that direction, of course. If it ever comes to a choice between observing an apparent 'local custom' and following the advice of the navigation authority, I think I'll go with the navigation authority.

  18. As a single hander, if I come round a bend to see gates open i'm pleased (if it's just one gate then even better!). If they are closed and a gate is open against me then I have to moor to set the lock, so closing the gate whilst I'm at it is no hardship. I do close most gates behind me unless I have a good reason not too such as not being able to get on the lock landing (moored boats/too shallow) etc. I've also perfected the lock mouth hover which makes it no real hardship to jump off and pull a gate shut and hop back on. I've done a lot of my boating so far on the lower GU where as others have stated, CRT wish the lock to be left empty with a paddle raised. When I exit one of these locks I see no harm in leaving one gate open behind me as well.

  19. I believe a new business plan for BWML will be put to the board in a couple of weeks. I suspect more consideration will be given to disposing of BWML than expanding it due to its poor performance against plan and its reputational impact on the Trust.

  20. Looking to the future!! What are the chances of this marina, and the whole free hold being bought cheap by CRT/ BWML. From Steadman?. Steadman will have a choice. A very big pond,Cafe and land Or say, hell to it and just sell as is to BWML, getting rid of PL within the process. This of course maybe achieved by steadman just saying I'm not playing no more, or CRT enforcing ist or 2nd charges against the property, and waiting for PL to mess it up all over again. Long term strategy? Was I posting this in my sleep? Col x

  21. Get a large jar and on dry land weigh out all of the standard things like rice, pasta etc. mark a line on the jar with a sharpie and lable it. Job done. Forget weighing yourself and start to measure your waist instead, I gauge my self on trouser size and ability to do up top button! Good luck with it all

  22. Where I am unaware of local custom, I generally leave as I find. Up here on the Lee and Stort, exit gates are general left open (unless there is a specific notice to do otherwise). Plenty of lock gates on the Regent's are quite springy - you can close them as much as you like but they just swing open again!

  23. Doodlebug, as someone has mentioned, most people would struggle to measure what they need....I'm just looking at my boat and thinking, how would I draw something that fits to my ceiling etc (bulkhead wall). I think you would have more success if you approached all the boat hull builders...and had a catalog of furniture available for certain boat "makes". For example, I have a Liverpool widebeam. Lets say I wanted an under the gunnel book shelf, I could go to your website, click on "Liverpool widebeams"....see a few bookshelf designs, click order, and receive it within the week. This is the only way you might achieve mass orders, regularly. It would revolutionise the boat building industry, as many boat builders would buy direct from you. You would need to have a wide list of available products on your website (but no stock, as you can make them on demand?) Here's a list of things I'd expect to see on your website 1. Bulkhead walls 2. Bed frames 3. Clothes cupboards 4. Kitchen cabinets and layout designs 5. Ceiling feature beams 6. Microwave and eye level oven cupboards 7. Walling, and ceiling boards, with the trim bits to cover the joins 8. Wiring conduits along the floor, or up on the ceiling 9. Saloon tv/DVD shelf 10. Saloon L shaped sofa 11. Dining nook, table, chairs. 12. Hatch doors and frame 13. Roof boxes 14. Generator boxes 15. Battery boxes 16. Cratch seat/storage 17. Porthole frames 18. Window frames 19. Shower enclosures 20. Bathroom/sink enclosures/cupboards Even if you specialised in one small set of boat hull designs, you could cause a bit of a stir....One of the benefits I imagine is that you could also branch into using various types of materials to suit peoples budgets....oak, plastic,..ply... Most things which cause problems on boats are: 1. The slant anf height of the under gunnel wall. 2. The slant and height of the above gunnel wall. 3. The curvature of the roof One you have the blueprints from the boat builders, you have a business You could even have a full set of furniture/layouts designed for different boats...eg a 57ft Liverpool widebeam. People could buy a sailaway and order a "kit" from you.

  24. Many moons ago during the 1930's my old dad was a very keen road racing cyclist as were a great many folk. His bike had split cane wheel rims and a fixed gear rear chain sprocket and only the front brake as is still permissable I believe. Out in Essex in an area called the Easters was a large kind of country lane trianglular circuit where the clubs would gather to do sprints and time trials ect. My dad used to pace Reg Harris there when he was training for an event. I still have my dads cup which he won, engraved 1935 for winning a Chelmsford to Gt Yarmouth road race and then back again in the evening.

  25. went through a lock with another boat the other day, who had a center rope through a fairlead to the bollard, the thing pinged off like a bullet, if it lands in North korea weve had it ! Just re paint the area, and avoid having one of these surgically removed from your face.
