The design brief was for a low-priced, rugged car that would enable four people to transport 50 kg (110 lb) of farm goods to market at 50 km/h (30 mph), if necessary across muddy, unpaved roads. One well known design requirement was that the customer be able to drive eggs across a freshly ploughed field without breaking them.

I wish I still owned my mk1 Escort, mk3,4,5 Cortinas , they would be worth a fortune now.

I genuinely think that the Mk 1 Escort is the best car Ford ever made.

Most cars are much better than the 2CV, it was barely a proper car, but of all the cars that I have driven the only ones that have really put a smile on my face are:

mini

2CV

VW Camper

All the rest are just cars.

I really want a Sierra RS500. Liam says he is never owning another MK1 Sierra though so that's killed that one off.

Quite possibly. You need deep pockets to own one now though!

I really want a Sierra RS500. Liam says he is never owning another MK1 Sierra though so that's killed that one off.

 

Never say never. I own a 3ltr BMW now and although it's old and drives great there is something about an old Ford that gets the juices flowing.

We have a MK1 Sierra XR4i in the garage. 

Liam is a panel beater by trade. I believe the expression is once bitten twice shy. 

I won't be holding my breathe for the RS500 :D

Jesus, just looked at RS500 for sale £70k upwards.

In 1959, the Royal Navy ordered 65 2CV pick-ups, which served aboard HMS Bulwark in the West Indies and the Indian Ocean 845 squadron RNAS. The pick-ups also served with the 42 commando aboard HMS Albion, which required robust and reliable vehicles to cope with jungle tracks, that were light enough to be taken ashore by helicopter from the aircraft carriers.

Fascinating - I never knew this. It was an adventurous choice, as the 2CV wasn't even on sale in Britain at that time (and I don't think that the camionette version ever would be).

...and the infinitely adjustable sunshine roof (which, on the earlier ones, reached down almost to the rear bumper). If you wanted to lux up your deuche you could buy a boot lid with a hump-backed sort of shape to replace the canvas at the back.

Earlier models at least had no fuel gauge. A long strip of (I presume) rubber was attached to the inside of the petrol cap. You unscrewed the cap, pulled it out and looked at the strip of rubber. If most of it was dry, it was time to get some petrol.
