Spam messages send via PM system

Featured Posts

Don't take it personally whatever you do - spammers are paid by these 'viagra' selling rackets to write computer programmes to infiltrate internet communites and get their spam to as many users as possible.

It's not a real person that sent you the spam, but a 'bot'. Definition of a bot

This is how they managed to target so many of us. We will probably have to look at updating the boards software in order solve the problem. It's kind of a similar thing to antivirus software - as the spammers get smarter with their clever programmes we have to figure out new ways of solving these problems.

I know it can be upsetting, but please understand it's not a personal thing, these spammers neither know nor care who you are and it is a program that sent you that message.

We are really sorry about this but please bear with us as it might take a while to sort out.

For now, if you do receive this spam, report it in the usual way, please do not reply or click on any links as it only encourages them.

Well I've come across a lot of bots in my time but this is a new one! Thanks for this advice, Lady Muck, and the particular ar*&hole (Canadian Health) who messaged me will just get deleted.

I got the message to. These people are a pain but at least you can get rid of them - unlike the power crazed mob in our local planning office that are trying had to offer their neighbour the chance of closing the Canal Central shop on the Monty by stinking him out with ever more heaped muck carted from approved sheds containing hundreds of cattle on an ever growing 3 year old factory farm (Though the planners maintain this is not a factory farm and that farming is not an industrial process.)

Completely off topic re spam but would you like to elaborate on this comment perhaps under a new topic say "Ugliest Building on the Montgomery under threat from farmer trying to make a living!

I'm getting them too, but, I just look at them, put my cursor over the link to the "Topic" and look at the address in the bottom left corner of my Firefox window (should be the same for other browsers), then I see it's a short address, and I don't bother clicking...

Then I deleted it...

Just as an aside, please do not click on these links, they are often a tactic they use to get your computer to download trojans, viruses and malware, if you have clicked, get your Anti-virus scanner running and disconnect your computer from the internet, this will help prevent any communication between any viruses and the "central computer". These sorts of software are often used as part of a network of DDoS (Dynamic Denial of Service) attackers, which can take out websites in a very short space of time, a forum I am on is being attacked in such a way and has been causing real problems with the administrators and server people. So, to prevent it is to treat it, the more computers that are cleaned, the less chance there is for these scum to spread their malware about...

I also got one last night.

For what its worth, this is this information we have from IBP

PM Flood Control Patch for Invision Power Board 2.3.6 Released

We have received numerous reports from clients regarding spamming on the Personal Message (PM) system in IP.Board 2.3.6 and below. After consulting with reCaptcha (the provider of the captcha system in 2.3.6) we believe that humans are being used to bypass the captcha and then the newly created account is given to an automated script which sends PMs in huge quantities to your members.

The patch we have released today introduces a flood control setting to the PM system in IP.Board 2.3.6. This will limit how fast a member can send PMs thereby giving you and your moderators time to ban the offending account.

The download of 2.3.6 in the client area has been updated with this patch. If you already have 2.3.6 installed, you can download the patch along with instructions right in this topic. Applying the patch is quite easy but if you have questions feel free to contact support. If you would like support to apply the patch for you be sure to include your admin username and password, and if you are not an IPS hosting customer, your FTP details.

Upcoming IP.Board 3.0.0

IP.Board 3.0.0 contains this update already and new spam mitigation tools such as timed user group promotion. We are also exploring new centralized spam identification and banning services which we hope to have updates for you very soon!

Hopfully Jon will be able to apply the patch as soon as possable, and version 3 will not be too far away.
