RAB Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 Looking for a waterproof cover for use with Nicholson canal map books. As there doesn't appear to be a specific applicable cover (not un-surprising, although I don't mind being proved wrong!). I was wondering what others use/recommend? Many thanks in hopeful anticipation 🙂
Alan de Enfield Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 (edited) 1) A large size freezer zip bag (ASDA etc) 15 for about £2 2) A water proof map cover Camping and walking store (Go Outdoors etc) £10 3) A water proof map cover (from China via Ebay) £4+ Edited July 17, 2024 by Alan de Enfield
Jen-in-Wellies Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 Are we talking waterproof as in it will survive a shower when cruising, or waterproof as in it can survive a fall in to the cut?

First time we went up the Ashby we had our map on the hatch all nicely laminated with a keyring loop in the top corner. Due to an incident when mooring with a stiff breeze and the centreline (blame, to this day, is still being established) it went for a swim. I went back with the short pole to hook it out just in time to see it stop floating and sink into the murky depths Despite much poking about and many casts of the magnet it was sadly lost to Poseidon. Waterproof is not always for the best 1

Chris Lowe Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 Ordnance Survey have a range of different map cases in their online shop.
davem399 Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 About 15 or so years ago, I bought an Ortlieb map case and it is still going strong today. Not the cheapest, but good quality.

DJ Adams Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 Hey there. If you can order from Amazon, here's the one I ordered and use, and am happy with: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08NL83GXJ/
Arthur Marshall Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 I just made a box with a hinged lid with some perspex inset. It sits on the hatch, would take a full on gale to shift it.
pig Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 We use an A4 document holder with clipped lid. its showerproof, but wouldn’t survive a dunking. Fits a Nicholsons guide perfectly Amazon do them - search CIOUYAOS A4 File Box 1

I'd add a couple of small neodymium magnets to the tabs on this to have it secure on to the steel slide. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ortlieb-Unisexs-Map-Case-Bag-Transparent/dp/B000NG8FAS

Rain proof really. I guess if it falls in the cut then I've probably lost it and it's not likely to happen (famous last words!). Have a semi-trad so map book sits on one of the seats, rather than the hatch, when were not looking at it.
