So should be open late Wednesday 12th. Didn't get fixed today Update on 12/07/2023: Please be advised our specialist contractors have attended site today, unfortunately we have identified a need for further investigations before the repair can commence. Additional contractors and engineers will be returning to site tomorrow afternoon. We are hopeful that following tomorrow’s site visit we will be in a position to advise a timeframe for the works. A further update will be provided tomorrow, Thursday 13 July.
PeterF Posted July 12, 2023 Report Posted July 12, 2023 Add in the closure of Otherton lock on the S&W from today till Friday I am hoping one route will be open to go north. Wife just reminded me we could turn off at Fradley and go through Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
Arthur Marshall Posted July 12, 2023 Report Posted July 12, 2023 What a surprise. Bad as last year as far as trip planning goes. Only now I can't get home either way.
Rob-M Posted July 12, 2023 Author Report Posted July 12, 2023 There must be a few hire companies cursing as we saw a number of hire boats pass us on our way back along the Staffs and Worcs to Great Haywood and their boats will now be trapped between Otherton and Halsall Green.
Arthur Marshall Posted July 12, 2023 Report Posted July 12, 2023 What is annoying is that it has "now been found" there are more issues, after a week taken purely to make something or other. Any decent inspection should have found these at the start instead of wasting a week when the "issues" could have been sorted in preparation for the repair. Of course, this has all been done by contractors as CRTs blokes are all busy repairing the rest of the collapses, and they'll have no incentive to hurry.
PeterF Posted July 13, 2023 Report Posted July 13, 2023 (edited) Update this evening, looks like it will be shut for another week. Looks like the S&W and Shroppie for us assuming Otherton gets fixed tomorrow. Update on 13/07/2023: Please be advised our specialist contractors have attended site today, and established a method of repair for the broken heel post at Lock 57, Top Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal. We are now awaiting for additional parts to be fabricated and our contractors will be returning to facilitate the repair next Tuesday, 18 July, we anticipate the repair works will take two days to complete. A further update will be provided by Thursday, 20 July. Edited July 13, 2023 by PeterF
Tracy D'arth Posted July 13, 2023 Report Posted July 13, 2023 So another week before they think it will be fixed. At the least. I am glad I don't have half a dozen hire boats stuck the other side, the hire firms must be frantic.

I know Anglo Welsh at Great Haywood had asked hirers not to head off on the Four Counties ring but plenty had gone off down the Staffs & Worcs so will be stuck the other side of Otherton.

I'm fairly fraught myself, caught up by Northwich, trying to do the trip I tried last year, and failing again. I went out early this year in order to avoid water shortages. I suppose the upside of no one using the cheshire locks will be enough water saved to keep the navigation open. Probably. By the way, which bit is the heel post? Google won't tell me...

I found this old thread when I searched to find out what the heel post was Also an image on https://www.rideau-info.com/canal/tales/failed-gates.html with parts labelled.

Ta. That's the bit I thought it was. Can that really be fixed without rebuilding the gate?

A couple of chaps on each gate with everyone in line. The 12th insisted on "doing it properly". I think you'll find that the boat yard regularly clear the top gate, but the only real problem is the people who insist on leaving fenders down.

CRT did this when the IWA festival was held there and lots of boat movements
BoatinglifeupNorth Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 Now open I hear from Derwrnt Mouth to Stensen👍
PeterF Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 Open since Monday. They had 2 stoppage notices and it appears they only cleared the one on Monday, todays notice was rather late.
Rob-M Posted July 19, 2023 Author Report Posted July 19, 2023 Hassall Green lock now open Update on 19/07/2023: We are pleased to advise the repair to Lock 57, Top Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal has been successful and navigation has resumed.

Seeing a few stoppages popping up lately on the T&M, mostly vegetation related with falling trees awaiting clearing. Maybe people are flagging them up more on Twitter and other social media platforms.

In the 1960's Dutton Stop Lock only had one gate - open it, go through, close it behind you - boat went faster in one direction.

It wasn't that easy in the early 1970s after the Bollin embankment slipped, though with the 4 to 6 inch difference in level, you certainly went quicker in one direction.
