Digging out my Christmas decorations I came across something I made a few years back. 
I’ll buy a pint for the first person to identify all 4 well known canal men posing as Santas.

Here is a question did Christmas have the same value at the time the canal network was established and to what extent did the worthy engineers, contractors, and committee members celebrate Christmas. 

 

In deed do the four men class as "well known" These images could represent people like Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak etc etc as much as they might represent Francis Egerton, James Brindley, Josiah Wedgewood, John Gilbert or may be John Smeaton.

There were quite a few contemporaries of Telford depending on the year range, John Rennie senior was one and Cubbit was another and then there id Francis Giles

Earlier on there could be Yeomans the list could increase exponentially and with the clues even more so.

 

By adding beards and hats does ,make the interpretation harder
