Heartland
At Spon Lane there were a number of different works and colliery basins, quite a busy area once and the glassworks dominated this area. The Stour Valley Railway was built by the contractor Joseph Pickering and involved making a tall brick wall to separate the track from the New Main Line of the BCN. Here is a view from a bridge that crossed the New Main Line at the Glassworks

beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
Yea, ‘course it is lovely watercolour, who painted it and where can you see it? Ain’t it lovely to know Turner took time to visit Tipton.

Heartland
It is a J.M W Turner image with a view at Tipton Green at the BCN/ Dudley Canal Junction looking to the Pickfords warehouse and the Bissell Wharf on the right. Dudley Castle on the hill. Edward Paget Tomlinson did make his own interpretation of the Tipton Green Carriers Depot but the warehouse height was somewhat greater than what it was. Midland Canals lacked the large warehouses of the North, because the type of traffic was different.

The original watercolour is hanging in the Lady Lever Art Gallery on the Wirral. So yes, you’d have to cross the Mersey to see this view. here’s an engraver’s interpretation of Turner’s water colour, part of the Tate’s collection, how accurate any of this is 🤷♀️ for Turner it was more about capturing the idea, would you see churches from here? I don’t think so, but it adds to the theme.
Pluto
He painted a couple of L&LC views as well, of which this is one, but where?
beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
Well, I know he liked to paint ruins, which was the fashion at the time, so I reckon that’s Kirkstall Abbey in the back ground. eta: and after looking at a map, is that the Leeds Bradford Road? Pluto
Yes, with what became a brewery being built on the left, and the new turnpike to Bradford crossing the canal.

beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
Yeah, I’d looked on map and saw there were a couple of churches , but wondered if he’d shifted them and perhaps made more than could be seen, I’d say you’re right and there are 2 distinctive churches to fit the bill but I think they’d be just hidden from sight. Heartland
The Tithe Map of Tipton shows the area painted at Tipton Green. On the right was the New Cut that went to the limekilns and there seems to be a stop there indicating that the New Cut had an independent water supply. I remember going through the middle of it by boat and feeling the heat from the furnaces and the rolling mill, seeing the hot metal and watching the sparks fly -- quite something... I too have that memory - I was really disappointed when I went through after the works had been demolished! Heartland
I am not sure where the reference of Shelton Bar Steelworks is directed. However for the present here is a map query which shows locks that were once a staircase, but not then as this is a part of a tithe map.

We’re at Bratch Locks, originally a staircase of three before being altered in to the three separate locks we now see with side ponds, the distinctive ‘tower’ we see is ‘139’ and recorded as an office, Edited March 19 by beerbeerbeerbeerbeer

beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
I was thinking Gaily to start with wondering if the Lock at Gailey, which is deep, was once a staircase, At Bratch, was it a case of building new locks beside the staircase? Heartland
The location seems to be the same, but there was a plan for single locks before the work was done.
Stroudwater1
Interesting to see the pumping station not being present on the map at Bratch. An easy one, though not many will have navigated here. Well worth a visit on foot for those who haven’t been.
