1950's . Barking Park boating lake, Barking, East London. Not the sternwheel steam paddle boat giving trips on the left.

The 'Phoenix', no less.

We lived opposite the park gates on Longbridge Road and then moved around the corner to Wilmington Gardens when I was 11.

I can't remember a steam loco on the miniature railway but I can just about recall being sat in the petrol loco (Little Nan?) and having my picture taken when it arrived.

More useless info.........

Billy Bragg lived in a house backing onto the park behind and to the right of the photographer.

The first photo is where I went boating a year ago today (Skegness canal).  Also below is a shot of @magnetman , who spotted me when we shared a lock at Brentford and did seem to be having a fun day. The boat I was on turned left,  the other 19 boats turned right to get to Teddington. Blog here: https://scholargypsy.org.uk/2020/06/15/brentford-to-limehouse/. Managed to avoid the Clippers which restarted today.

If I understand the nice Mr Google's map correctly, this concrete bridge no longer exists.

I think you are right. Is this the only UK inland waterway where you are told to drive on the left??

Billy Bragg went to my school, Mayfield in Goodmayes lane. As did the jazz trumpeter Kenny Ball, he was a customer of mine with his car in the late 1960's, a Mk10 Jaguar. Although Kenny Ball was in partnership with Bobby Moore and Sean Connery owning the Jaguar dealer Gidea Park Motors, he and Sean Connery brought their cars to me for maintenance. Kenny Ball and Sean Connery didn't trust the fitters at Gidea Park Motors. Sean Connery had a green Jensen CV8 but it had a 3 litre BMC straight 6 in it. A friend of mine bought the Jensen from him and stored it.

These photos are out of the date sequence but are interesting. They are of the Canso Causeway and canal. The causeway links mainland Nova Scotia with Cape Breton island. Its construction in the early 1950s interupted the tidal flow in the area. The sea to the east is the Atlantic ocean and to the west an arm of the St Lawrence seaway. This means that high tides are at different times on either side of the causeway. However as there is some traffic between the two a short canal with a sealock was constructed so that boats did not have to go all the way round the island to get from one side of the causeway to the other. These photos were taken in 2011 when we visited Cape Breton.8091633_CapeBreton2011212LR.jpg.27832f1450ee183e2efdb6aa2073c1b2.jpg

Jo Cox

Member of Parliament,

boat dweller, sometime liveaboard narrowboater

her violent death on Thursday 16 June 2016

was a personal tragedy for her and her family,

a national tragedy for all of us.

May we in our minds eye go to the calm waters of the Calder and Hebble Navigation.

As we leave Battyeford Cut heading upriver under a long narrow pedestian bridge

and eight boat-lengths further on under another bridge,

we have passed through the extent of the navigable waterways of the Parliamentary Constituency of Batley and Spen.

It's just one of those things that we will not be able to show her that cartographic quirk on the edge of her constituency.

On her parliamentary website it said

"Surgeries. Thursday 16th June – 1pm until 2pm @ Birstall Library and Information Centre.

No appointment is necessary, please just come along".

May that personal commitment to openness and our democratic processes stand in her memory.

Jo Cox Member of Parliament: we will remember you. May you Rest In Peace.

From my brief tribute at a waterways meeting that weekend.

Jo Cox was murdered at her parliamentary surgery that afternoon.

Flowers at Birstall war memorial

We flew our ensign down on the half mast position in the days after her death and also the days the Greenfall tragedy

Neither should have happened.

Gopsall Wharf Ashby canal 1975. WRG lent us one of their Smalley machines so we could dredge the loading place. Mostly coal which had missed or been shoveled off the boats. N. Hill bagged it up and sold it later on. This land and the wharf belongs to the crown estate but we were never coal  by appointment.

16/06/19 contd......

We cruised on to the pontoon at Bardney where Simon & Ann wanted to go shopping.

A friendly chap had tied up there to ride out the floods. He had rigged up a means of getting off the pontoon without having to wade.
