  1. Maybevthey should but I suspect that a response might be that it would be too much for the current full time IWA staff to taKE on and also that it would also be a massive challenge for local volunteers. i would like to see HS2 canceelled totally and instead spend the money on existing road and rail infrastructure. Howard
  2. I'm sure there are but I'll leave it to them. It was just a light hearted comment, (hence the Emoji), and not having the slightest inclination to join the Facebook revolution. Re Twitter, again not on it personally, but the front page of the IWA web site speaks about Twitter and it looks like they have a presence there. Howard
  3. Even better and more secure; use a double Bowline or alternatively an Anchor Hitch. Howard
  4. She does say that she has no experience at all so I am glad she has asked for advice and I hoe she enjoys the boat once it reaches the Thames. Howard
  5. Are you planning to go down the North Sea from the Humber - I presume this boat is a wide beam (usually 30 ft)? Have you any experience at all or is this new territory for you and your partner? If you are not happy doing this it is not a good idea in the time frame you mention, and especially at this time of the year with an untried boat and an untried skipper. Much better, easier and much, much quicker to ship it by road transport. Incidentally, there are also issues onthe tidal Ouse at Cawood - machinery flooded as is Selby swing bridge, which may mean Cawood Bridge being a barrier to boats for a period of time. Howard
  6. The difference between it and an anchor is that it has no flukes so doesn’t dig into the seabed, but relies purely on its weight. Howard Crossed with David Mack
  7. You can also access the IWA web site without being a member. There is quite a lot of information there, including local waterway news. https://www.waterways.org.uk/ Howard
  8. True, and fingers crossed. A great obstacle we struggle against is the growing difficulty of recruiting new members, especially younger people, and certainly this is a common problem for many membership organisations these days. Both IWA and NABO are not alone in this regard and it may not be helped by the wrongly help perception, which I am sure exists, that thinks of Inland Boating/Boat Owning as predominately the domain of older people, and I suspect that the prohibitively high cost of hiring as a taster also deters younger people- especially families. Howard
  9. I am a member of both the IWA and NABOI and your comments may ring true to both organisations, although the stock answer might be instead of being a non-member why not join them and help to spread the message.. In IWA we do try to promote what we do at local boating related events but it can sometimes be an uphill struggle getting the massage across. With particular regard to IWA, one thing we have to remember is that without their efforts in earlier times, and the continuing efforts of the Waterways Recovery Group, we may not have such had such valuable asset to play on! Why not look out for your local IWA meetings - we meet once a month for example - where you be able to meet up with like minded people and maybe learn something about what is going on. Howard
  10. Thanks for both explanations! If that is the opinion of IWA or NABO I suspect that their actions would be irrelevant to Tonka. I wonder if he is a member of either or both? Howard
  11. Pardon my ignorance but what’s a ‘chuff’ in this context ? Howard
  12. Fair enough, it was only a passing comment. Howard
  13. I think he has already said that he has had answers and is satisfied with them. Howard
  14. Very interesting but a tad academic! Why not stick to the relevant points about the site inadequacies? Howard
