In no particular order I think for me it is:

The peace and quiet.

A slow journey through a landscape you can take in and appreciate.

Wildlife, flora and Fauna.

Messing about with boats

The heritage of the waterways.

Meeting like minded folk.

... and lots of other stuff too.

This^^^^^

Messing about in boats has always appealed to me ever since I was about 3 years old, when I used to watch "Tales of the Riverbank" on the telly. I totally LOVED it when Hammy out in his little electric boat. Hooked me for life.

Latterly, having a boat is a reason to own and run a charming slow-revving vintage engine oozing personality.

Tonkering. Oops, tinkering. Installing systems, stepping back, looking at them appraisingly, then tearing them out and doing them again. And nobody says (apart from once every 4 years) it should be over here not over there. I don't quite know why it has to be on a boat but it does. I do move it sometimes, next year I want to do Standedge Tunnel.

I live aboard and what i like is,

1 people who walk on the canals generally are very chatty. (Too much in summer 'sometimes')

2 the quite nights and the dark with a rosey red fire

People seem to be more pleasant on the towpath but obviously not always.

The canal life has helped me emensely.

Ooww but the mixed coloured leave's is amazing.

It dont matter really people seem nicer around water.

Fair enough but there are lots of trees where I live and I enjoy going out for a walk along the canal, particularly when there is snow on the ground. I agree about people being nicer.

For me it's a question of what I miss the most. This varies from week to week but at the moment it's not being able to cast off and move away from the neighbours. A bit difficult with a terraced house :D
