Brades Locks

Cheers Archie, we did probably hundreds of journeys round the BCN but we always missed out that line. Factory was the preferred route for some reason.

I thought the conversions on the old photo were fascinating, I dont think anything like the furthest one survives now.

Are any of the converted Joshers still in anything vaguely like their hire boat personas?

Obviously some of the Grand Unions have remained so to greater or lesser degree, including the one I understand will largely be rebuilt in that style.

I thought I'd look up which motor that is, but unless I can't read, I can't match it to a fleet list.

I'll start another thread on it!

I am thinking Kidderminster, the work flat 236 definitely being under the control of the Midlands Region.

I had come to the same conclusion. I can just remember when the cut below Kidderminster Lock was a wonderful private place, known only to those on boats and the few blokes that used to come out of the backs of factories for a smoke on the towpath. Now its just all car parks and MacDonalds and shopping centres !

Here's the same area today :

But where is this? I'm guessing probably BCN somewhere.

Top of Brades ?

Looks a good call to me, and compares well to the modern satellite view on Google Maps.

I have to admit though my BCN knowledge is not good enough that I would have got it!

I was bought up on the B.C.N., and even though I did not really know it until about 1970 these scenes had barely changed in decades.

It is funny though that the top of Brades (Bradeshall Junction, but I never knew it as this name) came to mind instantly even though I have not seen this view since I left working on the boats in 1985. Somebody will now provide evidence that this view is elsewhere captain.gif

Top of Brades ?

edit = there was a slide in this collection showing Brades Top Lock taken from the footbridge. Is this from the same position but looking towards Oldbury.

After I posted I thought it looked sort of Old Main Line-ish, so it could well be. The towpath edge there is certainly as wiggly as in the photo.

Ive no idea where this shot is but looking at it I noticed the ladder on the side of the building, it looks like a regular ladder and not attached to the building. Im not sure I would fancy climbing something that high... with my weight I dont think the ladder would like it either.
