Fan belt (or is it just called an alternator belt)

Featured Posts

Hi All

Trying to build a collection of must have spares and think we should carry a spare belt (the one that goes from the flywheel to the alternator).

The engine is a Bukh 36 and currently has a belt that is 1145mm (45") long (outside circumference) by 9mm (3/8"), and has a serated V section (with a flat bottom).

Where/what belt should I get as a spare - there are no visible identifying marks on the current one to get an exact replacement.

Thanks

David

Specific suggestion:-

(when I had to use V-belts) I always bought from Bearing Boys and their own brand (Medway) lasts 'forever' The nearest size for you is:-

You may find it cheaper elsewhere, in which case go for it. Happy to post if that's practical for you.

Thanks for all the stockings and pantyhose suggestions but I'm keeping all the wife's spares for myself ;)

Does it matter that the Medway ones appear to be solid as opposed to the sawtooth style? I don't mind so long as it works?

Thanks.

Yes it does - toothed = 'cogged belts are much better for a small increase in price. When I changed the cogged belt lasted for some years until I replaced the engine. The plain variety lasted barely a season.

My sincere apologies - I posted the wrong item. Her we go again:-

Medway call them 'cogged' belts

The idea of the notching is to help the belt grip on small diameter pullys but as the DV36 only has two pullys and un-notched belt will probably do. However the ones T W Marine sell are notched.

Thank you Tony.

Thank you for this. The link shows 9.7mm - I measured mine at about 9, but it's been on there a few years so I guess it could have started off about 9.7mm The pully will definitely take it.

I will order 2 today!
