Survey booked!

So we offered on a 62ft ex hire boat last weekend, got bounced, upped the offer and accepted. Went down and paid the deposit mid week and have been told our survey is also booked for Tuesday next week.

 

I cant travel down to be there but the wife wants to, so is there anything outside of the normal we should be asking when he is doing/done the survey?

In my opinion...three things

After the hull - the second most expensive 'bit' is the engine. (£5k replacement ?)

 

Are you having an engine survey (not just looking at the belts and the colour of the cooling water) ?

 

If it has been a hire boat then the engine should have been properly serviced. Has it just come from the hire fleet, or, has there been a private owner(s) in between ?

 

Any records / evidence of oil changes by said private owners ?

 

Example : ours is a ex-hire boat and in "THE BOOK" there are the workshop re-charges (invoices) for every 100 hour oil changes. Once it went into private hands there are marina invoices for every 100 hour oil change, it then changed ownership again and there are receipts for filters and oil on a regular basis. Since we owned it there are invoices for oil and filters with the engine hours noted.

We left the surveyor to crack on, came back a wee while later only to see white painted squares and numbers along the hull. Got worried thinking these were problem ares but they were the bits he had tested with his testy thing. Good luck and happy boating.

Ask the surveyor if you will need to re-black the hull. - if so arrange to get it re-blacked, or agree with the seller what happens if you do not go ahead (they may ask you to pay for the re-blacking)

 

(He will be scraping the blacking off in somewhere between 200 & 300 places)

just arm your wife with a camcorder and your list of relevant questions, otherwise everything gets muddled in translation, and you and the wife end up shouting because she failed to take it all in, digest it and repeat it word for word back to you, most mobiles record if you don't have a camcorder, plus it's nice to show,if and when you decide to sell it

A bit over the top I think.

 

If for any reason you think the person accompanying the surveyor may not remember everything just arm them with any questions and a note pad for answers. A camcorder or phone is intrusive and unnecessary.

If the surveyor has been around canal boats for many years, you might ask him to comment on any item that is or has been installed and exhibits poor or bad practice (even if it adequate). You should agree that the comments are just that - 'comments' to avoid any mention of liability.

 

To my mind that's where a proper surveyor earns his keep - spotting things that are 'not the best way to do that' or 'that looks a bit dodgy, you might have a challenge with that later'

When we had our latest boat surveyed I was suprised at the things he didnt know. He did give us peace of mind about the hull but not a lot else was helpful. Maybe some are better than others I guess. At least you will know the hull condition though.

It's a great thing to do.....you'll find that the physical boat (my opinion again) is a smaller part of the experience when combined with the feelings of freedom...community spirit ...and the ability to see our beautiful country in a way never before seen.

When we got the survey done we received, 2 days later, a most comprehensive written report and a CD with all the results of the survey. Isn't this standard procedure ?If so would this not avoid the need to follow the surveyor about filming ?

Many congratulations on finding your "dream boat" ........ I hope all goes well and as smoothly as you would like.

 

An experienced surveyor is what you need ...... as has been mentioned he / she should be able to make a first impression comment on for example the electrical or gas systems, before any deeper inspection is done. However, you do want your surveyor to be thorough and exacting. That's what you're paying him / her for after all.

In the genre of your choice? Heavy metal is nice on your hull, but on the CD it could drown out the surveyor's voice. I've been to some of my son's gigs and you can't make out a word of what the vocalist sings.

I used Craig Allen after the marina banned my first choice of surveyor!

 

I was very pleased with him, he was thorough, full of useful advise and included a BSS in the price.
