Braunston pubs

Featured Posts

Morning,

Me and wifey are off to Braunston and Crick marinas tomorrow to have a nose at some boats, pick up a few ideas and see whats on offer.

Ideally going to Braunston first, then a spot of lunch and then going over to crick.

Just wondered if anyone can recommend a good pub for lunch down that way?

Cheers

Dave

I think the Admiral Nelson is the best place for lunch, not cheap but good quality home cooked food and in a nice setting beside the locks. The Boathouse is a Marstons Two for One large food pub. Good if you want cheap food. It can be good but equally it can be bad. I'm not sure what the Old Plough in the village is doing food wise now, it seems to change. Oh, and the Wheatsheaf doesn't do food, no matter what some signs and canal guides say smile.png

The Nelson and the Boathouse are polar opposites. If you are in a hurry, use the Boathouse ..... food is reasonable, for a reasonable price and served promptly .... good view out onto the canal.

The Nelson is slower, more expensive for food, but better quality, and you can watch boaters trying to open the lock gates :)

Hardest thing for me is to pass the 3 chandlers with my wallet intact.

Nelson is indeed pricey and VERY slow. We waited an hour for a sandwich last week.

Of course if you are there by car, you have plenty of other nearby options, such as the New Inn at Long Buckby, (Whilton Marina is probably the best if you just want to look at lots of boats unimpeded by staff), or at Napton.

As we passed the Nelson yesterday there seemed to be building work going on cordoning off some of the lock-side area, although I think it was still operating.

Interesting comment, have been Whilton before, i like the way they let you browse at your own pace. Do they do this at Braunston or crick?

Braunston is very similar to Whilton, but possibly slightly superior, Crick never used to give out sets of keys before but I now understand it comes under ABNB, they have never allowed unescorted viewing unless you are seriously considering buying a particular boat, ie 2nd or 3rd viewing. My advice has always been to use the Whiltons to gain some knowledge, but if you want serious input and advice look to the Rugby Boats and the ABNB`s of this world

Braunston is happy to issue keys and let you look around on your own.

My son had his boat with a broker on the GU. Unaccompanied viewings were the norm. On a routine visit after the first month, we discovered that all the brass latches (from 2 side hatches) and specially turned knobs had been stolen. The broker shrugged.

Edited to add that we couldn't say for how long the boat and its contents had been unsecured. In my own experience, potential buyers were always accompanied (handy for explaining or answering questions). If someone was obviously showing great interest, I was always happy to leave them to get a feel of the boat for a short time.

The Boathouse is fine if you're happy with a meal that is either stuck in the microwave until it goes ping, or deep fried, or generally thrown together with no thought whatsoever!

The Nelson is ok for food, but really that's all that can be said for the prices they charge. Agree that the service is slow. If I was writing their school report, I'd put "could try harder".

IMO the best all round pub in the area is this one http://www.thecountrymanstaverton.co.uk/
