Most towpaths are classed as permissive paths not public rights of way.

Some are definitive rights of way but only a minority.

The sudden closure of towpaths at times would appear to confirm this. As I understand rights of way to close one you need to

1. Apply for a closure order

2. Where ever possible provide an alternative.

So if they were rights of way the path could not be closed suddenly as warning could be given while the closure was being applied for.

N.B. I am not suggesting your statement is wrong just providing what I feel is a logical reason for people to believe your point.

yes they are and long may it stay that way. or do you believe the canals are just for boats?

Yes, it is wonderful that people are free to use the canals such as walkers, phyclists and best of all, fishermen. It's just a shame that we have to subsidise them in the process.

We have passed many a fisherman whose attitude appeared to suggest that we were actually trespassing on his right of way! The greatest analogy that you can afford them (that is if you are going slow enough) is that of; "If you sit by a railway line, at some point you are going to see trains".

Then quickly duck your head to avoid the rapidly approaching ground bait that's fired from their catapults.

It's a good site if you want to weave knots, not good if you want to tie them. I have tried to explain this distinction before without success. Have a look at the Bowline:

All nice and pretty and no help at all if you want to tie a bowline with a boat on the end of the standing part of the line

Cheers Richard,

Knots and lines are not me! My dad was a Merchant Seaman and whatever happened along the DNA route his ability to do knots etc., certainly wasn't passed on to me. :-(

Put the line around yourself, holding onto the bight in left or right hand as preferred. Push it onto the standing part, twist the standing part into a loop, pass the bight behind it and pull it back through the loop.

I use wrond anchers sometimes but they aren't always strong enough in soft earth.

I mean they are strong enough but will 'drag' sometimes. often a pin through the ring helps avoid this

if you want mooring pins for real men have a look at these

What I find particularly vile is dog owners who allow their pets to foul other people's property, mooring pins ropes and the like. I'm not up for providing dog toys either. If I walk a friends dog I make sure he behaves,he is very well trained and a pleasure to walk so its not too arduous.

I don,t mark my pins,I use piling hooks and chains if possible but other wise just belt the pins in and tie up.

We have some really loveley designer pin covers. A fellow boater gave us these a couple of years ago and take re-cycling to a new level. Angie, ( N.B. Lady Esther) crochets these from luminous M & S carrier bags. They are like little gloves, Tie onto the pin's with an orange lace, made from yet another supermarket carrier bag. Things of beauty and simplicity in themselves. Love them.

Thank's Angie.
