Problems at Apperley Bridge

I doubt very much the dry stone embankment that has stood for just a few hundred years will be put back. According to the "engineer" they're blocking the hole/towpath back up using the modern building technique of pilings and tarmac.

Well the whole of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal within the City of Bradford is a Conservation Area, so if they are proposing to put back something which is not the original detail, then they should be getting a Conservation Area consent!

So hands up all those who said they would bring in two big cranes to lift it out?

On this thread and the other we have had everything from air jacks to helicopters, scrap dealers to prisoners! we have all been great engineers.

Lets now put our new found skills to supermarket trolleys and bed mattresses!

Just an update on the work at and near Dobson locks where the crane fell in.

Another crane is expected tomorrow to complete gate change.

This is the latest on the 60 foot section of towpath that had to be removed to facilitate extraction of the upturned crane. About 100 foot section of new piling is nearing completion to be followed by back filling.

Meanwhile the plastic dam just upstream is holding up with assistance from the two pumps in the background.

The CART guy in charge seemed to think they were still on schedule for the whole section to be open by easter. Others expressed some pessimism.

That yellow digger/pile-driver looks a bit precarious to me!

I hope it doesn't fall into the canal....

Since its on a large flat area custom made to support the 2 x 200 ton cranes used earlier and only a little higher than the canal bed, I think that's unlikely.

Any news on the lock gates?

Dobson staircase locks were being worked on last Thursday with (another) crane due last Friday to complete work.

Me too, it was just a light-hearted response to Alan's previous post.

  • 2 weeks later...

We walked to Dobson locks this morning and the engineer there said that works won't be "completely" completed by friday but there should still be passage. However the lock will most probably be manned. Fingers crossed peeps.

P.s If anyone passes through this weekend could you pm me as to your success.
