HS2 Northern Routes

And, as usual, it will be of most benefit to London, Brum etc. While many parts of 'UK' have no public transport at all.

I know, instead of re-opening all these formerly closed canals, let's electrify the Grand Union! :banghead:

At one time the French thought it was the way forward on the Canal de St Quentin...

The Riqueval Tunnel electrification (electric powered chain tug) used to extend a couple of km, between Riqueval Tunnel and Lesdins / Tronquoy Tunnel

This shot shows some of the old electrification posts between the tunnels.

Have you ever heard the TGV passing close by in France? It sounds like the end of the world coming, though it does only last for a few seconds, it is EXTREMELY NOISY!

Chris

This is the A1 autoroute and TGV line (sorry, not a very good piccy of the TGV for the trainspotters) going over the River Somme. We moored here over night (we had to, as Feuillères lift bridge had got too hot and jammed, OK in morning when it was cool). The Autoroute was more annoying.

>>> and it is not Carbon neutral or Green in any way, its CO2 output will be horrendous.<<

Now hold on a minute. Does that take into account the CO2 that will not be emitted by (1) passenger aircraft and (2) umpteen hundred private cars which would be doing the passenger miles in the absence of HS2? I rather doubt it.

Regarding the noise emissions I don't think it's valid to compare Eurostar trains running on conventional tracks (cf Stratford). It may well be the gaps between carriages that have an effect, but airflow round the bogies as they pass over a fixed point will also be important.

I would like to see the Great Central line to London reopened, though: if the fares were reasonable this would provide a lot of extra Manchester (and Sheffield) to London capacity at lower cost -- but of course the journey would take over three hours (centre to centre).

Time to renationalise the railways!

Sorry :smiley_offtopic:

Just to be clear the reference to Eurostar (which was mine) was not a comparison with trains running on HS2 it was just an observation that I'd noted - as in that particular train emitted a distinctive type of noise different to other HST's and I was curious as to why.

The Hadley Wood video is taken in a fairly open station, whereas Stratford looks pretty well enclosed (high embankment wall) -- that would make a difference. Two different recordings though, with no calibration, so it's impossible to compare levels.

Those Eurostar drivers do love to tailgate each other don't they?

I just can't see the point of HS2 apart from being a conveniently expensive infrastructure project in a time of depression. I'd rather see the money spent on a replacement for Heathrow.

Birmingham to Leeds in a minute -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21236952

This brings to mind a short film which the BBC often seemed to use when they had a bit of a gap between programmes during my boyhood: "London To Brighton In Four Minutes". That was actually filmed from the driver's cab of a train.

These days if they have a gap they show interminable trailers for forthcoming shows instead.

I used to have a library of "Video 125" cab ride railway porn....but Mrs TNC discovered it.... :o

...Talk of which... "dinner with Portillo" is ready...followed by Welsh Railways...all about the Welsh Highland mmmmm!

I don't use the railway, but I was wondering what would happen if the subsidies, instead, came from an increase in the ticket price. Have we actual experienced a railway running itself - post privatisation.

At the moment, it is only nominally private. I bet the shareholders and dividends aren't phantoms.

Yes, I believe the preferred location is somewhere in the Chilterns:-)

Is how I do it - there may be a slicker way.

Had more time to look at this now and found an interesting bit on the DOT website.

This bit as it comes into Leeds passes quite close to Lemonroyd Marina (where we used to moor) and crosses the Aire & Calder Navigation turning towards Leeds to run right next to the Navigation as it passes by Woodlesford potentially spoiling the piece and quiet of a very nice mooring spot. It's actually running between the River Aire and the canalised bit at that point and will be very close.

I bet the owners of the new houses just built in the last couple of years near Woodlesford lock are not going to be too chuffed. The existing railway it's planned to passover is already on an embankment so the visual impact of a viaduct to cross that is I reckon going to be considerable.

It also passes over the Aire and Calder Navigation and the River Calder between Kings Road Lock and Birkwood Lock - another nice section.

Ive just spotted that Martin. Looks like Lemonroyd is gonna get it bad.

Just heard that the HS2 is going to link up with the Western region at Old oak so will have to pass over the GU Padington arm at some point, or under it as the Old Oak common rail complex is lower than the canal.

Possibly - it passes relatively close and relatively high up as it needs to clear the existing railway.

If we were on our boat at Lemonroyd overnight the noise from the adjacent local rail line was intrusive in the morning and I guess this will make things a bit more noticeable.

Hopefully though the work needed to get those two viaducts constructed will finally stop Fleet lane flooding under the existing rail bridge....so there could be a benefit....

Would you be happy for the project to go ahead if it didn't pass almost 3km away from your home?

No.........Read last autumn statement from the Treasury , They say we cannot afford it and the profitability is suspect.

They are financial experts not Politicians on a campaign.

Spend the money on the Hospitals that we need

A colleague of mine lives in the new estate at Woodlesford where the fork is gonna be. He already has a single track line backing on to his house. He now has 20 yrs to sell up before he has the HS2 running along side too. help.gif

Oh dear!

Yep,

I am totally pissed off with this.

This house I bought 9 or ten yrs ago , and rented out whilst abroad until 3 yrs ago , it was to keep into my old age after retiring from boating, and As it was in the middle of nowhere in Green belt i felt sure it would be a worthwhile deal and be what i wanted, like all narrowboater.......Peace and tranquility.

Now my £330k investment and hundreds of hours work is worth about £80k less according to my local estate agent, and near impossible to sell for years. But considered to be to far from the line to qualify for a pre HS2 valuation buy out by HM govt. Not even a payout for the valuation difference they do not care.

I have sat in a house in France the same distance from the TGV with roughly the same elevation......... It was hell.

So if one of you is a deaf trainspotter I have the ideal house for you. But not me

I cannot wait to move onto the new pair and sail off and forget this nightmare until I am to old to care !

I gather the new station in Sheffield is going to be some distance from the city centre.Sheffield Victoria was convenient to the city centre. It was demolished by visionary planners who saw no future in the railways? How is a loss making HS2 going to provide an economic boost to the country after the construction phase? .Why should we trust government to make a decision like this, when they have so often got it wrong in the past.
