Jen-in-Wellies
Is that a crane on the first boat? Never seen that before.

It’s not configured like a normal carrying boat so perhaps it’s a maintenance craft.

Those frames at the bow, where a cratch board might be. Any ideas what they might be for?

I wonder if they are part of a fence. Rather than being fixed to the boat they may be items in the boat. The crane might be on rails.
Derek R.
The Caldon image looks to be a spoon dredger, with the 'spoon' laying alongside the 'crane'.
Popular Post Pluto
This photo of a spoon dredger on the Spring's branch of the L&LC. The angled beam has been lowered so that it sticks out over the side, with a chain or rope attached to the spoon passing around a pulley on the end of the beam and then onto the windlass. The spoon is then lowered onto the canal bed and pulled into the mud by the windlass, the spoon being controlled by handle held by the man on the right shows the system in use
Heartland
I was looking at the maps for the terminus of the Leek Arm, but there seems to be no overbridges on the section to the Churnett Aqueduct and wonder if the first image is a Hazelhurst Aqueduct with the cottage there.
stagedamager
i'd say it was Hazlehurst too, with the photographer standing on the bridge over the railway.
