Plants Lock 41 T&M

Featured Posts

Oh dear. Just a week after Plants lock (nearside) was re-opened, after work on the top gate, offside lock is closed, due to: "a snap on the collar gate which has caused the gate to fall."

At least it is handy for the pub for nb Pheobe stranded in the lock.

Well not very handy if you were on board at the time..

You would have thought they could have somehow got the gate open so they could get out (unless they're worried it could fall onto the boat)

I think its open again on one side, so as long as its narrow it should be OK

But presumably he can't get the boat out of the bust lock and into the other one?

Just how narrow do you want Phoebe to be to fit through one gate? 3 foot 6? ;)

Its not a serious failure unless the quoin post has come out of the bottom socket. A ratchet strap will hold a gate up. At one time the local length man would get his mate to help him set the collar packing back in.

Not sure, but thought that might be one of the locks with signs up saying to use the other  if the boat is slightly large.

The outside or offside locks on the entire flight are the later locks and therefore usually the wider until the two below the railway bridge just before Wheelock, 65 & 66 which are the otherwise round.

However the road bridge at the lock tail of 41 is very low and slopes left to right (looking from the head gates) so I always try and grab the lefthand one.

I see the lock has been repaired early this morning to minimise disruption.

Update on 02/07/2021:

To minimise disruption, our teams started works earlier than planned to repair Lock 41, Plant Offside Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal and we are pleased to advise, navigation has resumed between Lock 41 and Lock 42.
