Before I got the Go Windlass my windlass of choice was a long throw aluminium one but I found that the big circles my arm had to make were causing me painful shoulders etc. With the Go Windlass, if it is quite easy paddle gear, I use the inner slot and the reduction in my arm movement has made locking pain free for me again. I love anything which makes life easier! haggis Interesting. I use a short throw windlass most of the time, which is less leverage but a lot less arm movement than a standard one. @Postcode and @cheshire~rose tried it last year after the BCN challenge on Farmer's Bridge locks and didn't like it, but reckoned it was worth 90 seconds a lock ... MHS
Bought Wendy a Go-windlass with the swivel handle for Christmas. She loves it and usually uses the short throw option. The long throw ratchet is useful for those really stiff paddles that need a bit of welly.

I tend to prefer "grippy" gloves, which I find good for everything except windlass work - and a revolving handle would solve that problem. They're only selling the revolting handle niw. Mike Todd
There are some locks where a long throw windlass has a problem as there is insufficient clearance above the balance beam to allow it to pass so it has then to be used much as if it were a ratchet windlass. But this is not sufficiently frequently to deter the user on our boat from making it her windlass of choice. Not for me, however.
