The ranger is manipulating the woodchips thrown in to seal the gates and maintain waterlevel above the lock. As they did each day at each lock after the passing of the last boat booked that day.

City Mill Lock  Bow Back Rivers.

Compare 3Mar1980   16Sep2010  3May2019

Sorry to have missed out on the SPCC trips through those waterways as I worked in a building bounded by Marshgate Lane, BR London Eastern Region,  the northern outfall sewer line, and The City Mill River, for a year in 1975.  The Docklands Railway now covers part of the site.

Not the most scenic part of London but not short of "character". Nor was the workplace, The mechanical engineering and aeronautical workshops and wind tunnel for Queen Mary College.

About 10 years later the factory across the road featured on an episode of The Duty Men when Customs intercepted container loads of smuggled cigarettes.

One of our staff had an ex Woolwich munitions barge moored up along side the Queen Mary College Nuclear laboratory, demolished and decontaminated to build the Olympic Stadium.

I noticed when passing under it the other week that the towpath bridge at Marston Junction is numbered as a side bridge of the Coventry Canal. Does this mean the theoretical junction is actually a few yards in to the Ashby channel?...

Marston Bridge 15

Yes it's a new post-number since we last passed this way. I suppose the first bridge along the Ashby is Bridge 1 and a bridge zero or 1a or 0a might all be confusing ...
