"At busy times work one up and one down to help save water"

Hmmmm ....

According to the sign, whether the next boat is ascending or descending, the staircase has to be set with the top chamber full and the bottom empty. After passing an ascending boat the bottom chamber is emptied for the next boat, or if passing a descending boat the top chamber is filled from the pound above; after which operation the same amount of water (one lockful) has passed from the pound above the locks to the pound below. The order of ascending and descending boats may affect the waiting times for the two directions, but not the quantity of water used. Discuss ...

On this day in 2023. A fake tug rescues a stuck historic tug. Or have I got them the wrong way round? Anyway the moral of story is that if you want to explore the lesser travelled bits of the BCN you can't beat a boat built on the BCN by folk that know the BCN.

This is Vulpes and Tardebigge on the Titford Canal heading for the pools earlier today.

What happened

2' 10" draft versus the BCN backwaters and the pound a few inches down.

They simply got stuck in mid-channel. Look at the soup next to Vulpes stern for an idea of the conditions.
