Assuming not, then because christians are idolaters that counts all of them out as inheritors for a start.

No Steve ........ not taking the piss, however I'm not preaching either. Yes the choice of words can be twisted to mean anything, hence we have to rely on our conscience to understand their true meaning.

 

Anyway I am a Christian, because I believe in God and Jesus, but ....... I'm not a 'member' of a denomination. I also do not believe other 'religions' are 'wrong'. There are billions of people, living totally different lives, in totally different conditions. So why on earth can't there be one God, but having different names for different groups? (And yes I know of the quote from the Christian bible)

 

If anyone wants to start a fight they will ...... finding any excuse e.g. Wot you lookin at. So why not use religion as an excuse. Anyone genuinely religious will not fight.

 

So who's left????????? me I suppose (said cheekily, and a bit tongue in cheek)

Yes, then the police will shoot your dog, arrest you for keeping a dangerous animal, and the thief will sue you! Who said crime doesn't pay?

Weekending - not sure if it has been discussed elsewhere but how do you do it? i.e.

 

- tactical stops near stations?

- how do you choose your mooring for the 2 week period?

- is the boat alarmed

 

I never had the confidence to do it when we had the boat and for no logical reason - only that paranoid fear that on approach to the boat after 2 weeks it would be a smouldering carcass - daft I know !

 

As you say fear is worse than actual - my wife's parents are obsessive door lockers - I once popped out to the car parked in their drive and when I got back to the house door it had been re-locked !!

 

There is a great deal of trust with boats and boaters, indeed, my gas lockers wouldn't lock.

 

The only things I ever had stolen were a manky old mop and a lifebouy.

 

To pinch the Nike adline - just do it!

 

To give you some examples this, as I remember it, is where we have left the boat this year on a trip from Rufford to Limehouse and (almost) back: -

 

Parbold for 48 hours

Castlefield, Manchester for 10 days (with a side trip to the FA Cup semi-final at old Trafford by boat in the middle).

Lymm for a week

Wincham Wharf, Northwich - this was for the boat to be repainted

By Rumps lock, Middlewich - 2 weeks, inadvertently as we had a breakdown (broken drive plate)

Kidsgrove - 2 weeks

Weston - 2 weeks

Glascote locks Tamworth - 2 weeks

Islington visitor moorings, London - 5 days

Paddington basin 2 weeks (I know you're only allowed 7 days officially but the BW office at Paddington are very flexible if you have a genuine reason for not being able to stick to 7 days

Berkhamstead - 2 weeks

Fenny Stratford - 2 weeks

Castlefield, Manchester - 1 week

Parbold - since last Sunday - to be moved back to Rufford this weekend

 

Most of the above were accessed by a combination of lifts and car shuffling from our home in Preston. We used trains at Kidsgrove, Tamworth, Berkhamstead, Fenny Stratford and London, helped by the fact that the west coast main line from Preston follows the route of the canal most of the way. Most of the northern locations we already knew. From Tamworth south we used Waterscape to find 14 day mooring sites and then matched them to train stations. Some of the visitor moorings have moorings wardens which we have found out about by default, which provide considerable peace of mind. I guess you could always track down the location of these via BW offices.

 

You always have a slight nervousness when going back to your boat that it won't be there or will be as you say a smouldering wreck but nothing has happened to us in 5 seasons, other than some wags untying the ropes at the Navigation pub at Gathurst and the boat lying on the wrong side of the canal. We don't have an alarm.

I think as most thieves or vandals don't really have a consicence, then it won't matter how good your alarm system is, or anything else. If they want it, and the opportunity is there, they will take it.

 

You just try and make yourself look as unappealing as poss in the meantime. We drive an old escort. Our last one was red with bright yellow, orange and pink flowers painted all over it, cow print car seat covers, fluffy dice and stuck out like a sore thumb. Several months before we did this to the poor thing, broken into. Since then, nothing.

 

Not sure what to do with the new one yet, but no-one has even looked sideways at it.

This topic drifted into the weekending issue halfway through. I will try and bring it back. I have always found that when looking for a location at which to leave your boat for a week or so.

 

Always moor alongside a church, it is so reassuring and comforting to see the Holy Spirit hovering over it as you leave.

I was just wondering yesterday why religion never raises its (insert adjective of choice) head on this forum and then... wooo! Big time! Big font!

 

Rules and laws whether backed by state or supernatural force are no substitute for natural human compassion and decency; thankfully, most of us do have enough of that, whether through good upbringing and/or natural sympathy. Those who don't ... well, there's enough views about how we deal with them elsewhere on the forum. But leaving it to god won't help the rest of us much in the here and now, no matter how much we (i.e. you; I don't believe it at all) may believe transgressors are going to suffer in the next life.

As far as this end of the L-L canal it much better than it used to be. Not so long ago the towpath had to be kept locked up and there was a lot of rubbish dumped in it. The area has been successfully redeveloped over the years. Its probably safer now than at any time in the last 150 years.

how about decking your boat out to look like a mobile chapel. would that keep the vermin at bay?

Thanks for that. Quite quite unbelievably the only place we have ever been untied was the Navigation at Gathurst....................perhaps it is the posh house opposite that doesn't really like us boaters !!

You see ........ as soon as religion is mentioned, most people spit the dummy aka Good grief, you really are a sick puppy :D

 

However FORGETTING where it came from, just think logically for a moment.

 

We all have a conscience, even though most now overcome this feeling of guilt when they do wrong.

 

This is to teach us right from wrong. We are born with this gift. Plus we are taught by our elders from their experience. Just because they haven't learnt from it (look at the mess our society is in) and so don't teach their offspring right from wrong ....... look at all the winging, even on here 'going too fast' 'no respect for others' etc. etc.

 

So what is so wrong in not stealing from others, becoming a drunk or a druggie incapable of supporting yourself, meeting a person of the opposite sex and staying with them, forming a 'family' where right and wrong are taught. This includes not trying to hurt the person you are with i.e. shagging around. Or valuing false gods ..... money, boats, cars etc. etc.

 

Trying to make our world a better, rather than a worse place surely cannot be wrong.

 

This is your 'freedom of choice' that is talked about so much ....... you can either try to do right; or not. Your choice.

 

I am not spitting the dummy, dummy. All organised religion is extremely suspect and to be avoided in my veiw. I have no problem with those who follow any religion or indeed none, but proselysing and using the imaginary word of an imaginary deity to justify a way of life, political decisions or in fact anything is twisted and wrong-headed.

 

All the points you make about 'behaving well' are encapsulated in a belief system called 'humanism', read up on it, it's interesting and viable and involves taking responsibility for your actions, try it someday brother :cheers:, you may learn something about your part in the general scheme of things.
