Barrus engine

Featured Posts

Looking at a boat with a Barrus shire engine tomorrow.  It’s had a new engine in recently.

I have been told that there is a big difference between the yellow and grey engines and the grey engines are better.  Is there any truth in this or is it an urban “towpath” myth.

What colour is the one your looking at or haven't you seen any photos of the engine? I'm sure I've seen a green Barrus Shirehorse engine, but perhaps it had been repainted.

Someone will be along shortly with something more definitive about your colour issue, but I wonder if the info you're hearing actually refers to the different Barrus engines, the Shanks and the Shire?  As I understand it, the Shire is based on a Japanese Yanmar engine and has a better reputation than the Shanks which is said to be based on a lesser known Chinese unit.

and I suspect for good reasons Shanks seemed to be dropped by Barrus PDQ. Forget colour, you need to establish Shire range or Shanks range and avoid Shanks.

If it is a new engine I would expect it to have the base engine emissions plate on it, this will probably show the base engine manufacturer.

If its a new engine its unlikely to be a Shanks as I think the last were sold about 5-6 years ago (approx-I can remember talking to Barrus engineer about it when he came to sort out a problem on one of the last ones)

I suppose its always possible that someone has stored one though.

Well yellow, grey, red, blue it didn’t matter. The boat has no engine despite being advertised as having one fitted......its on order.   Not only our politicians are generous with the truth. ?

Hope you didn't have to travel too far. What was the boat like? If the engine is to be installed and commissioned prior to sale it might be worth considering.
