  1. If any one needs any help with internet on the move or WiFi topics please ask away.. Having done over 100 installations countrywide now, I think I can say I've got a good idea what makes this tick the boxes. Networks, Location and Equipment Martyn
  2. I have seen lots of posts, past and present, about WiFi. I have also been given advice of how to get the best WiFi on board. I have been advised to get the following: Poynting XPOL-1 V2 5G aerial/ antenna Huawei B535 With an EE sim. We are with EE. After reading others posts and listening to advice I am confused as people are mentioning multiple cables/sizes connections, 12v plugs. Is there anyone who can just say whether the above is fine or is there an alternative? Also pictures of the wiring setup or cable connectors may help me. Many thanks if you are able to help.
  3. Found this on eBay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276346684524? Seems a good bit of kit and small. Can @IanD find a fault with it to stop me getting one 🤔
  4. Have a bog standard rooftop aerial from Wifi Onboard and it’s worked well. However I think a few bashes on the aerial have damaged it internally. Done all checks and with internal aerial in router only and am getting 21mbps but with external only 4 or 5, it clearly needs replacing. But, it cost about £150 for a replacement, can anyone recommend another type that can easily be screwed onto the existing base at a lesser cost?
  5. Both bluetooths "on", reasonable 4G signal, hotspot on mobile "on" VPN connected. So why is my iPad not connecting🤔
  6. Hello Narrowboaters! I am SURE this topic has been asked over and over, but its hard to find a definitive answer. For the next few years, I plan on living aboard and continuously cruising through Summer and Autumn. Unfortunately, I still need to work — but its all on my own time. I do however need good wifi once a week to teach online via Zoom. My plan is to, obviously plan ahead — and try and get to an area of good reception a day ahead of my teaching day, to allow for any change of plan and the need to continue on to find better signal. I travel most of the time, and usually just buy a SIM card for a spare Phone, and teather to this to get internet on my laptop. On this forum, Im finding two methods, 1. buying and antenna and a router and a proper boat set up, 2. A SIM card on a phone. Given my situation, which would you suggest to get as much sweet wifi as possible and not go to mad to find it! And which company etc. would you recommend going through for the installation if the built in solution seems to be best? Im not to concerned about cost, mainly concerned about ease of use, and also ease of install!
  7. whats the best 3g/4g omni directional aerial /Router set up for week signal areas . i think where im moored the best network provider will be EE .
  8. Hi all . We have recently moved marina,s and now our 3 signal is a bit slow . Looking into weather we need a outdoor aerial and if so what other people are using . My understanding of WiFi is not the best 🤣 . Any pointers would be great .
  9. Hi all. Not sure if this is any use to you guys but I've just signed up for this unlimited phone, messages and data plan. It's costing me £18 a month and the coverage is great with 4G 5G and the rest.. They sent me a code so if anyone signs up using it they get a £10 Amazon voucher. I know WIFI ONBOARD sell routers that need sims so just thought it may help someone. https://i.smarty.co.uk/dHOKML ANYWAY THAT's the link above.. If you use it I also get a voucher so happy days all round.
  10. Hi been doing and reading up a lot on wifi including updates in this group. I’m kinda making a bee line to Maxview Roaming X due to good gain, router being 5g/4k streaming ready and to support heavy internet usage as I work from home using Ms teams/zoom a lot. Wondered if anyone has fitted the Maxview dish on the slight curved narrow boat roof? Has anyone got a Maxview and is all good? Keen to get a review as little is said about Maxview roaming on the Narrowboat world (very popular on campervans, caravans and motor boats). thanks
  11. I'm after a temperature logger such as the Govee https://uk.govee.com/products/wi-fi-temperature-humidity-sensor Which will allow me to record temperatures on board over winter. However I need a second facility and that is that in needs to be able to switch on 1500W of heaters when the temp drops below 4degC. I can find a separate item to do this such as https://sonoff.tech/product/diy-smart-switches/th10-th16/ But would like one item to do the job. At present I have analogue Temp sensor and switch but I cant monitor it remotely I just get a txt message if the temperature drops below 2degC
  12. Evening, Sorry if this has already been covered but I haven't been able to find it! I've been struggling with internet, trying to stream NetFlic, or do video calls and I've decided to upgrade to a 5G wifi router. (Whole separate learning curve there!). However, my real problem is that I'm currently running a low-usage 12v boat (one 'car socket' with a USB conversion, & a couple of plugs running from an inverter (+pumps etc.)). The router's come with a standard AC to 12v DC converter, so atm my 'quick fix' is to leave the inverter on and plug it in. However, I was hoping someone may have had a similar dilemma, is there a way I can run it off a USB socket? Or will I have to bite the bullet and install a new 12v cigarette lighter? Should I be scared of running the inverter? (Juice comes from 2 bog-standard 6v Trojans in series)
  13. Anyone used a fire stick aboard? If I get one can I get rid of my satellite dish and will it get the wifi signal from my Android phone?
  14. I'm in a marina with wifi the signal is good on me back deck but all but non existent inside can you recommend a gizmo to improve the signal in side.
  15. My phone contract expires next month (The One Plan) and I' ve been thinking about different options for getting internet on my boat. At my home mooring there are lots of wifi signals which I can pick up when I'm outside near my boat (The Cloud etc) but I don 't get them inside my boat, coz it's a metal box I suppose. So is there a thingy which I can plonk on the roof of my boat, run a power lead into the boat and plug into a 12v socket? This thingy would pick up the wifi signals from outside and 'beam' them down into the boat so when I turn my laptop or phone on, I see all the available wifi signals which are outside. Does such a miraculous thing exist?
  16. Has anyone got this system aboard? Sounds like a good idea. https://corp.fon.com/en
  17. I bought subject Wi-Fi which is the original Buzzard (not Buzzard II) and haven't yet plugged it in but having trouble understanding battery charging instructions. Can anyone help? From memory it says I must fully charge and fully discharge three times before use. Charging is no problem (it comes with cigarette lighter socket charger) but:- How shall I know when the battery is fully charged? What is best way to fully discharge the battery (three times), before use? How shall I know when it is fully discharged? Curry's currently selling these units at a tenner if anyone interested.
  18. I've bought one of those clever little wifi devices that take a sim card and give you wireless internet connection on board. Now all I need is a PAYG sim card to put in it. All the ones I've come across are contract - no use to me, I only need it for a couple of days a month. I live on the Isle of Man and pop across to my boat once or twice a month for the weekend - contract would be an expensive way of doing things! OK, I can get any number of PAYG sims, but they're principally voice and text, I need data only. Has anyone found such a sim?
  19. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  20. Hi, Can anyone give me an idea of mobile wifi coverage on the Lancaster, specifically on the 3 network? I'm planning a trip but need to be able to use my wifi for work. Anyone with recent experience? thanks
  21. As everyone here have a boat and also need internet as a lot of us work from home. So here my question, I need the faster wifi as possible as I work in postproduction and I have lot of GB to download and upload. Any recommendation? I've been reading get as a kit of vodafone sim + tp-link router Archer MR600 or HUAWEI B535-333 + Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0001 is that right? another recommendation? router, antena? thank you guys!!!
  22. Hi we have just bought our Narrowboat in Crick marina, have looked at some WiFi packages and would appreciate if anyone knows any reputable installers as we not quite competent to install ourselves thanks.
  23. Hello After years of dreaming Ive nearly saved up enough to buy a boat but my work has now moved fully online which poses the question of Wifi. I know some people use their phones as hotspots and some people use ariels, but my question is with, any of these options is it ever possible to have strong enough wifi to host video calls/ stream HD content? (I run online theatre performances so a strong connection is essential). I would be hoping to be a continuous cruiser, in both cities and countryside. Thank you in advance. PS am aware I might be asking the earth, and maybe Zoom and a rural canal just don't go hand in hand.
  24. I have a new router. Is it true it should be placed fat the front of the boat, as far away from the engine as possible, to avoid interference? Or would it be Ok to place it in the galley? Thanks very much. Matt
  25. Hi, I’ve just purchased my first boat and will move onto it in the next couple of weeks. I’m an office working needing to work from the boat and have a lot of online workshops to do. Therefore good internet/ WiFi is important. I will be continually cruising so won’t benefit from moored WiFi. I also streem Netflix etc. Can somebody advise what my options are? Is the best option a mobile router or is there a cheaper option that will suffice?
