  1. They have the same no noise policy on some beaches in Goa snd run silent discos. Seems pretty successful.
  2. I tried Sofa-bed Barn at Crick a couple of times but never thought they were that comfortable - always seemed a bit spongey, like a load of giant cushions. Went with Elite Furnishings in Tamworth in the end and they were excellent, made me a bespoke L-shaped sofabed, and 2 years later we're still very happy with it.
  3. I've not moored there overnight but the Vale to me looks okay, and I was a student in then Lake Hall some twenty ish years ago and don't remember us going rampaging along the canals. Failing that I'd got Alvechurch, handy with the train and well out in the country, easily doable in 4 or 5 hours from the centre. There may be some 7 day restrictions there, so maybe you need to go at the ends.
  4. Be aware when you sign up for email notifications that you don't get previously published ones, only new ones issued going forwards. So you still need to check the online map for any stoppages and restrictions. Nearly found that out the hard way.
  5. At Kildwick Swing Bridge there is a small road access to the towpath, some vehicles use it to get to the farm there, it may be private, I saw several vehicles turn in there when I was operating the swing bridge. It runs alongside the bollards where you could wait on the Leeds side of the bridge. The last winding hole before the blockage on the Silsden side is at Bridge 183 Farnhill, so you could turn near there and head back.
  6. I came that way 2 months ago and exactly as others have stated. Nothing between Marple (excl) and Portland Basin, I could potentially have used Portland Marina/arm before the junction but they were closed, and in the end was able to use the Portland Basin one, on the Huddersfield side of the triangle in the Basin, I had a word with the guy from the place there who was fine with it. Had to tie my boat to a post near the bridge there, temporarily.
  7. I used Tamworth when I was in the area a couple of years ago, 30 mins walk or taxi to canal, think was more around £6 mark then. There were also buses to various places north and south, including Hopwas. I used Google maps to find them. Hourly trains in each direction from Atherstone too, as well as Nuneaton, which I also found longish walkable, or by bus or taxi, from the canal.

  9. I paid £1.59 per litre from the fuel boat on the Peak Forest two weeks ago. Ouch.
  10. So what's the latest price for diesel if you're buying on the cut then?
  11. What sort of prices are people seeing out on the cut? Saw £1.59 a litre from a fuel boat at the weekend, is that the going rate?
  12. I had this on the boat I bought. Turned out also the starter battery was also dead, which I got replaced. The Eberspacher worked, but in a fault a few weeks later the fuse went on it, which was in a small white box on the cables near the unit. Easily fixed.
  13. I moored for a night last October in Picadilly just above the junction at the start of the Ashton, by the aqueduct on the towpath side, and didn't have any problems. Also enjoyed the Ashton locks both times I've done them. There's always Stalyvegas to stop off in too..
  14. We had the CO alarms go off at the weekend. Just using the engine and had Eberspacher heating on, I have no stove, but had been reversing on canal in a cutting to a winding hole, about 300 metres back, with back doors open. Vented boat, reset alarms and got going in forwards direction and alarms showed zero. Has anyone else experienced that, and is it likely that it was just exhaust/Eberspacher fumes getting into cabin (of narrowboat) due to reversing for some distance?
  15. Yes, I don't understand why they can't let you book on the day, given its not as though it's limited capacity. Bit annoying if you're not sure what your plans are.

  17. Good news, looks like it's open again. Thought it might take longer than that from the photos. Notice Update: 30th July 21 Navigation: Open, Towpath: Open Shropshire Union Canal Location: Lock 14, Bunbury Lower Lock, Shropshire Union Canal Starts At: Lock 14, Bunbury Lower Lock Ends At: Lock 15, Bunbury Upper Lock Up Stream Winding Hole: 350 metres South of Lock 15, Bunbury Upper Lock Down Stream Winding Hole: 120 metres North of Lock 14 Bunbury Lower Lock Update on 30/07/2021: We are pleased to advise navigation has resumed at Lock 14, Bunbury Lower Lock on the Shropshire Union Canal following a successful repair to the lock gates.
  18. I found the Delph 8 and Stourbridge 16 reasonably quick, we did Merry Hill to Kinver comfortably in a day with time for afternoon beers, and that's a few miles and locks more.
  19. I thought corrosion from stray currents only occurred with direct currents, as one end of the boat acts as an anode and the other a cathode. Hence cathodic protection on some bridges, which passes a current into the steel reinforcement of the bridge to reverse the effect. Overhead lines are AC, so every 50th of a second the current would reverse, reversing the effect?
  20. Hi Rob, thanks, that's brilliant and looks like just the kind of system I'd want. Any thoughts on how you'd powere the control unit and WiFi if you didn't have shore power?
  21. Hi, does anyone know of a battery powered CCTV security system that you can use on a canal boat, i.e. one that requires no external power source and allows you view images remotely, by Internet or phone, while away from the boat, say for 2 weeks?
  22. We did part of the route from Birmingham via Wolverhampton then the Shropshire Union at the end of April. No queues then, except one boat at the solitary Wheaton Aston lock of course! Didn't find the Wolverhampton Locks too bad to be honest, seemed quite reasonably. We moored by Tipton the night before and went to Mad O'Rourkes, I've also moored at Wednesfield before and it was fine and not far from the Wolverhampton locks.
  23. It was a padlock with a combination on the side where the CRT services point is, which I think is the offside, at the access gate from Birmingham Road. I didn't see a CRT key but stand to be corrected.
  24. I moored at the BCLM Visitor Moorings last October, which were fine, someone told me the code for the combination lock (which I can't remember, sorry) and the mooring is secure. Busy road not far away but don't remember it disturbing us, maybe we were further away. I also moored more recently on the towpath side just before Factory Junction, opposite the residential moorings, and that was also fine. I moored just around the curve/out of sight from the pub by the junction, towards Dudley/BCLM, as the pub looked a bit rowdy. Both times has excellent meal at Mad O'Rourkes Pie Factory, which I'd say is worth booking if you're interested.
  25. I think that photo is Kingsley & Froghall Station, lower down the valley below the canal terminus at Froghall Wharf.
