  1. I'm puzzled by the complete inability of some people on here to separate different issues. When TD's case first got a mention some were adamant that he was a piss take, CaRT were right to pursue him. They were wrong but can't accept it and jump on anything and everything he says. He's critical of CaRT and doesn't mind expressing it at every opportunity but it'd be amazing if he wasn't. He is clearly very experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to boating, more so than most on here. It's a better place with him in my view.

  2. I think we should listen to Tony. After all, he has the ear of CRT and he moors near the sunken boat, doesn't he? Bath is near the Trent, isn't it? He's bound to know what is going on. :-) haggis

  3. I'm surprised about all the negativity here. Once the booklet has been published, the cost of sending it to all boaters is not so significant compared to posting just to those who register to see it online or downloaded. The PDF version is there for anyone, and is probably what they supplied the printers with (although probably in a commercial print resolution). Printing cost per item drop very significantly as volumes increase, so that producing 30,000 copied will not cost hugely more than 3,000. Postage will be at a reduced contract price. If it was just sent as a link to a download, many people wouldn't bother to look at it, and even those who downloaded it probably wouldn't read it all. The booklet as supplied is a useful addition for any boater. A number of us have been boating for 20+ years and probably don't expect to learn much from the advice, or at least think they don't need the advice, but I still thought it was worth a quick read-through. People who have only been boating for a few years will almost certainly pick up something they weren't aware of.

  4. Believe they have found a way of harnessing all the hot air found in this thread, it's a new process called the 'Dunkley effect' ..............

  5. Most of us here like dogs (and then there are "the rest of you..." ) People often say that it is only a matter of time before any given thread on this forum will descend into a conversation about dogs. Pretty much every banter thread has several posts about how dog-friendly any given venue is, what dogs get on with what other dogs, and if not coming by boat, where nearby they can stay with dogs. We should have a dog banter. Yes every banter is a dog banter in a way, but why don't we have a deliberate one? The pub should be totally dog friendly. There should be nearby accom that accepts dogs. There should be a nearby safe space to walk the dogs/ let them socialise. Potential idea would be Braunston, with both the Admiral Nelson being very dog friendly (to the point dogs are allowed on the sofas, although I am not sure I approve of that) and the Plough in the village permitting dogs inside. However, the Admiral Nelson does tend to be packed to the rafters on weekends, though maybe less so in winter. There are two big enclosed dog walking fields nearby to it. However, no land-based accom that I know of within staggering distance, dog friendly or otherwise. There are defo a couple of places within about five miles though, but that is not ideal So. Dog banter. A goer, or not? Suggestions of location? You do not have to have a dog to attend, obvs, but if you don't like other people's dogs, it's probably not going to be very pleasant for you! Date to be arranged if enough interest- not this side of xmas, possibly March?

  6. That's a good point. I would be against banning people who are occasionally disruptive. But where there is a track record of the same individuals, again, and again hijacking the discussion to indulge in their own personal spats, I would say ban them. If they want to start their own discussion group elsewhere, fair enough.

  7. It's not as though this is the only thread where sensible, useful information for boaters is obscured by disagreable rubbish. If you can't be bothered to do anything, there will be more examples. It's not a question of deleting stuff. It's a question of banning people wo post things which are disagreeable to the point tzhey derail legitmate and useful discussions.

  8. Tony Dunkley has been around the cut since the 60s to my knowledge. I first touched base when he was working for Birmingham & Midland, based in Gas Street. He worked the last of the commercial traffics to the paper mills and has a lifelong experience of boats and boating. I have much respect for this experience, if he chooses to take an antagonistic stance with the authorities, that's his choice, it doesn't dilute his knowledge. It's based on learning the hard way! Back in the late 60s, I met Nicholas Hill and Tony with Jaguar and Achilles, loaded with coal for Croxley. I was with another enthusiast, Richard Cooper, known as "Railroad Bill" because he worked for British Railways at the time. We worked south, from Berkhamsted if I remember rightly. I was given Jaguar's tiller, shortly afterwards I had Nick, incandescent with rage, on the butty's fore deck..... " don't you know when you've got something on your fu****ng blades" he yelled. As a youngster, I was trying to coil in the snubber, put the motor in the lock.....I can only plead inexperience! Tony...if you remember..give me a shout. It's all a long time ago! Dave

  11. Here we go again. seems to be forum shorthand for 'I disagree with you but can't think of any response ' and to miketheboikerman: if you take a swipe at Tony you can hardly be surprised if you get one back. sitting with a glass of wine playing passive aggression games just makes you look daft. from what he has posted - useful and knowledgeable - it is obvious he has been in discussion with people on the ground ( have you?) and guessing they treat him with more respect and get the same in response. if you were, for once, to engage with Tony on the issues he might treat you with respect too. for your post above you deserve none. (except for the predictable playground jeers of Rachel)

  12. This is one of the stupidest suggestions I've ever seen on here. Is it ok if i come without a dog?

  13. I don't know who knows what, or talks to who, but what I do know is that it is a disgrace that that boat is still in that lock. And ultimately, it is CRT's responsibility to open up the navigation. Either by letting the owner of the boat move, or do it themselves. This is just plain ridiculous, and if it wasn't so serious, would be funny. There was (is??) a boat moored in the side pond by the hotel, perhaps the boats stuck on the river can be locked up and join it?

  14. We couldn't use the moorings as a leisure mooring even tho' we are only there for a few hours at the start and end of our trips on the boat. We sometimes get to the boat late at night or very early morning and, rather than disturb people by putting the eardrum smasher on, we light the stove for an hour or so. I would also not feel happy mooring somewhere where we were made to feel unwelcome. I get the feeling that noise of any sort would be met with disapproval. Perhaps it could be a marina for stuffed and mounted boats rather than ones which are used although the collective brasso fumes may be cause for complaint.

  15. By saying "A somewhat bizarre situation, considering that the proposed method is virtually identical to that used by C&RT themselves to steal 'vulnerable' peoples' homes." as opposed to A somewhat bizarre situation, considering that the proposed method is virtually identical to that used by C&RT themselves when lifting boats. This introduced your perpetual sniping again and was clearly aimed at the casual reader thinking CRT only lift boats that are vulnerable peoples homes. Incidentally you introduced another untruth by saying they steal them which if true is easy to deal with get the police. However as ever S8 will have been through the courts they aren't stealing. I started supporting you other than the snipe but I am afraid all sympathy has gone.

  17. Its good to see the pictures now enlarged to a useable viewable standard,. Please report any glitches you may encounter to the link on the site, soon I understand a reprting facility will appear on each page allowing easy reporting of errors to CRT archive.

  18. I don't see the "canal was there first" angle at all, as the canal has gone through such a dramatic change of use. Back in the day, a moored boat was not earning, and it didn't have a thumping great Diesel engine or generator aboard.

  19. You seem to be obsessed with my attitude and sentiments to the complete exclusion of the real issues. I think you should try focusing to the exclusion of sniping as a more worthwhile alternative.
