  1. I suggest that those without a home mooring who cruise the system know perfectly well that they are playing by the rules and have nothing to worry about. I also suggest that those who bridge-hop within a limited area know perfectly well that they are taking the piss. The problem is differentiating between them, that's all.

  3. At least with a pump out you don't have to carry a poo suitcase through the boat, past the bed or galley, two or three times a week, and you don't have to plan your stops around elsan disposal facilities. A well installed macerator system, plastic holding tank and a self pump out option does it for me everytime.

  7. It's a hireboat, Mike. Built to a template same as a squiillion other hireboats, and has passed safety standards / every BSS since it was built in 1997/8. Cant have been that dangerous. Clearance was not failed to be noticed by my last BSS. The cooker was pulled forward slightly and a baton fitted to prevent it pushing too close against the back wall. There was no safety concern about side clearance at all. Your statement about side clearance has only appeared in one Hotpoint manual. Not in the Zanussi or Indeset ones I've read. So how can you imply it was a failing of all previous BSS examiners regarding side clearance if only one manufacturer - who didn't build my cooker - states the need for side clearance of high walls? The single cavity cookers are a nightmare for space. You have to open the huge door and leave it open while grilling. I consider that dangerous for anyone including myself walking by. I use the grill almost daily, often twice a day. Accident waiting to happen IMHO. If my safety standards are higher than BSS ones, then I'll go with my instinct. I don't understand your advice to fit a separate hob and oven. Why? I have already asked whether it's feasible to change my freestanding set up for built in. But why two separate units when there are so many single piece built in cookers? What is being gained from splitting the appliance, except for money in the pocket of the carpenters and fitters? Splitting the appliance sounds like over engineering a solution and creating more problems.

  8. I think boaters have a value to the system it has nothing to do with being CC or leisure boater. There is no special attribute to CCing that promotes them above the rest.

  10. With regard to The Chesterfield Canal much of the funding for the restoration so far has come from pockets other than that of the area authority. There are many areas that have required regeneration and so it has been a fairly simple thing to convince the body responsible for that regeneration that they should regenrate the area into something resembling a canal. There is a short area of unconnected canal at Renishaw that was restored by a building company who wished to build some nice new houses on land adjacent to the path of the canal. One of the stipulations on them getting planning consent was that they restore that section. There are still plenty of areas along the length of unrestored canal where "other parties" may well have some pressure put upon them to assist in the restoration in some way and of course Chesterfield Canal Trust's own work party and the WRG both have a massive impact on moving things forward along with a lot of individual people who do something as simple as buying a brick! To know that Derbyshire County Council is hoping to make the progress thay have outlined in the plan is sufficient. With the drive of the supporters and volunteers and some time the rest will fall into place (providing HS2 allows it to!) Ok so it is just a piece of paper but so was The Chesterfield Canal on 24 August 1769 when Brindley presented his proposals and the estimated cost then was £94,908 17s. I expect there were a lot of people wondering where on earth all that money would come from all those years ago ......

  11. I'm fairly sure was that was John Lillie, who would probably know, saying the Steadmans were drawing out £10k a month. But I think he said it was from PLM as QMP weren't conducting the marina day to day business. (It would be interesting to see a trading and profit & loss account for QMP as the statement of affairs tells us nothing about QMP's trading activity.) And yes as Dean points out, would the site with no NAA is worth a lot less now than last month. However, open market value is higher to a fresh buyer than to the current owners as a new owner would stand a far higher chance of getting a new NAA than a Steadman stooge. MtB

  13. Yes and no. In my case I went for 230V as I couldn't find 12V that would be built in. Also I found one that uses less then 40AH/24hrs on average (that also includes loss when converting DC to AC) I'm not sure if 12V of equivalent size would use much less. 230V units are much cheaper too. The only additional expense was dedicated pure-sine inverter as the main one is quite big & uses quite a few amps even when there's no demand.

  14. Perhaps focusing more attention on the way we all live, and its direct affect on global warming, would have a better long-term outlook for the flooding problem than shifting a bit of silt from A to B.

  15. Travel pack? Easy: When you go over to see the boat, the brokers hand you a bag containing a cheese sandwich, a soft drink and a Mars bar. Usually these are provided by the seller, though Whilton apparently make the sandwiches themselves.

  18. Pillings Lock Marina is a business and it owes a CRT for the marina connection fee etc. I know that innocent people (ie moorers in the Marina) will be effected but instead of yet again complaining of nasty CRT how about being concerned that a commercial company is failing to pay a charity valid charges for access to its assets? So according to some on here CRT are the villain no matter what they do. They may not enforce licence terms not only on individuals but also businesses. If that sentiment prevails then CRT face anarchy and lose a 3rd of its income because no will feel the need to pay them for anything.
