The low flats in the convolutes are to place hose clips. Available in lengths and various bores at car spares shops or motor factors, or used to be. zenataomm
If that had been Railway Vacuum Pipe, it would merely concertina upon application.

As stated used to be available in plan straight & convoluted in various sizes. Came in 3ft lengths Universal use saved carrying multple hoses for cars
BWM
The ridges in the hose allow it to bend without collapsing.

jake_crew
Thanks for the suggestions folks. I feel the the usual plastic fenders (even in black) round the nose of the tug aren't quite the look I have in mind. Some thick black plastic pipe would work, but failing that, rubber hose will do, though I only have one piece so far.
bizzard
This tubing would be too squashy as a bow fender on its own. However a nice thick length of rope threaded through it would reinforce it nicely.

Black Prince fit thick rubber-like D section vertically down the prow of their hire boats. It looks hideous (although I approve heartily in that application!) but horizontally round the bow of a tug might be quite an elegant but tough solution in keeping with the boat's looks? AndrewIC
Search for Quinflex or Tubano.
