Chertsey
That's not a reason though - that's the fear. Can't find the other thread about this that ensued shortly after I came back from August hols... But the gist was that there are some people I would be perfectly happy to trust to steer with my boat breasted up to them, and did so to very good effect in the summer. Obviously there are also plenty of people I wouldn't trust, likewise with working locks and no doubt many other things. Mike Todd
If I did that then I would insist on steering the boat...I would expect the other boat owner to have the same requirement. Choice between breasting up with a single steerer (requires a tad more skill depending on the boats and suitability for pairing) and retaining two steerers, no rope linkage but both entering in parallel. In my experience, both are preferable to doing it line astern. apart from some situations. Knowle locks, for example, can set up forceful eddies in the short pounds that defy straight steering! I was thinking more of sharing a flight with a stranger. As I lived and cced a fragile butty for years I obviously trusted some folk to steer the motor (not that many though). ditchcrawler
Surely a push against the far wall with the boathook will usually keep your boat snugly in place? from which end, bow or stern?
Athy
from which end, bow or stern? Surely somewhere around the middle would be best? I did this earlier in the year in several locks and it seemed to work.
Mike Todd
Fenders down, lock gate not opening properly,......... That's about sharing itself, not how you enter, surely?

ditchcrawler
Napton top lock...I said they wouldn't both fit. Must have been traveling south because the lower one is narrower but I wish they would open both bottom gates so not to wear the edges.

steven wilkinson
well this thread started off in quite an amusing fashion! However- I work the locks and wifey steers and very rarely meet fellow blokes at the lock. It works well for us as we are both competent steerers, but it is much, much easier for me to push lock gates and lift paddles.
