Crick Marina - Views of moorers sought please

Hi all,

We are considering a change of marina later this year. No problems where we are, just fancy a change of scene/routes. Wondering about Crick. It's easy for us to get to by car, within our preferred distance from home and we like the village and it's convenient shop/pubs.

Would be pleased to get the opinions of people who moor/have moored there.

Many thanks in advance :-)

We're there, on. Leisure mooring basis, and very happy.

Good routes out, for just an hours run, or weekend run, both lock free.

4 free tickets to the Crick show, interesting to watch the build up and breakdown.

For some the show might be a reason not to moor there.

Thanks Bod, we're looking for a leisure mooring too and as we spend a lot of weekends on board the short, lock free runs appeal. As an occasional single hander, how is the marina for getting in and out of? Also is it a 'busy' marina year round? Where we are currently we can spend winter weekends there and not see another soul.

Hi Valrene, can I ask why that would be a negative? Do moorers get shuffled around during the show weekend?

Well, as leisure moorers, they would not HAVE to be there for the show. But for most people it would be a bonus, there's always plenty to see. Plus if your boat's there you don't need to pay the inflated prices charged by the food and drink stalls!

Wind in the wrong direction, and strength can make things interesting!

But once you expect it, then it can be used to advantage.

The show, attendance, is not compulsory.

Runs out, to the north(Foxton) there are winding holes at reasonable distances, but a lack of pubs!

As a base for longer trips, you couldn't get much better.

Shuffled around during the show, some do, most don't. A questioner come around in good time, asking your intentions during show time. Boats that are not being used might be moored in, but it's not a problem. We've been there for 4 shows, no problems or faults to report.

The show is over a holiday weekend and some might want to use boat then for a trip. Just saying it's something to bear in mind. Mist also be a large number of boaters who do not attend the show.

Every occurence in life has a downside for some so just worth looking at all the facts before making decisions.

Personally if Cricks location suited me I would moor there and work around the show weekend.

Agree with Bod, good marina to moor at. Easy to get in and out though wind can make it fun. Most of the fellow moorers are friendly and helpful. Show weekend is fun and you only get moved if your moored at the show end, have had some great nights in the beer/music tent. Crick village is great, good coop, post office and 4 pubs and a club to socialise in. We moored here 5 years ago temporarily but have yet to move on...

If you use O2 for mobile forget it. It is amusing to watch people going up the field or canal bank trying to get a signal. broadcast TV can be difficult as Crick marina is in a dip. Some have also found that the dip acts as a frost pocket in winter and smoke tends to linger.

Nice marina, friendly staff and moorers. If you want to go to the show it's great to be able to go home for lunch or a cup of tea and a sit down. They send round a questionaire about your plans for the show weekend. Your boat will get moved if it is in the show area. Outside of the show period it reverts to a normal marina, diesel and pump out at reasonable prices. No club, cafe, shop or chandlery on site (we prefer it that way). We are now CC ing but if we would move back there if we wanted a home mooring again.

We moored there for some years and loved it. Have a plan to return. Nice runs out and adored the Welford Arm and its pub at the end. Often moored at the top of the Foxton flight and walked into the village.

Is that rather nice bistro/restaurant still there - the one by the canal (turn left upon leaving marina)?

Doesnt it just. We have moored at crick for 5 years. Our current fav pub/restaurant is the wheatsheaf in the village. Worth a visit should you return anytime soon.

Thanks for the tip. The Wheatsheaf always was a "gooden" if I recall.

Is that damned hill still as steep? Have been up and down that a few times in the past. Yeah, all in all great times a Crick.

Steep hill at Crick ?

Do you mean Cracks Hill ?

Sorry for interjecting...

Rog

Can't remember the name but it is the one at the back of the Marina. Crack's Hill sort of sounds familiar :-)

Whilst on the subject of names, can anyone remind me of the name of the pub at the end of the Welford Arm. That was a good grub pub!
