Hoose
What gearbox oil do I need for a prm 140?
RLWP
Engine oil - PRM say 15W40 on the website, the manual will say whatever the engine uses: http://www.prm-newage.com/p28-older-models Richard

Proper Job
I use multigrade for my PRM (as what Uncle Richard said), which is different to my engine oil (Morris golden film 30, non detergent) as it's probably not good for the gearbox
Flyboy
Why is Golden film 30 not good for a PRM gearbox? I can find nothing in the PRM manual that says you must not use a non detergent oil.
steamraiser2
Normal engine oil. No matter what brand or detergency is fine. Straight or multi-grade it makes no difference in a PRM box.
Tony Brooks
Normal engine oil. No matter what brand or detergency is fine. Straight or multi-grade it makes no difference in a PRM box. That should read "in a PRM hydraulic box". Mechanical ones now use ATF.
Sabcat
I'd have thought as they effectively have a wet clutch that you couldn't use an oil with friction modifiers in it, same as for a bike with a wet clutch which lots of people think means you can't use a fully synthetic. Machpoint005
PRM presumably expect their gearboxes to be hooked up to a modern basic diesel engine, which very likely uses 15W40. Hence 'use the engine oil'. Can't see any reason to deviate from that, and if certain oil specs within the general 15W40 classification were unsuitable, wouldn't PRM have said so? Sabcat
In the 160 manual they list some specific oils from manufacturers but don't give specs. Has anyone ever heard of a prm suffering from clutch slip because of the oil?
Liam
Apologies for the thread hijacking but what oil for a PRM 260? My parents have a Perkins D3 which they run on 30's oil. Should they run the gearbox on 30's, 15/40's or 80/90 gear oil? TIA
RLWP
Engine oil! Apart from the manual boxes (PRM120 for instance) all of the boxes take the same oil as the engine: http://www.prm-newage.com/p13-prm260 Richard

alan_fincher
As has been said, if you contact PRM about a hydraulic box, they will tell you "if the oil is OK in your engine, it will be fine for our gearbox". There is certainly no suggestion that one of the monograde oils is any less suitable than one of the multigrades so something like the Morris SAE 30 is absolutely fine. mark99
I think PRM are missing a trick. They could market an own brand high price PRM oil and make a killing based upon the number of queries on this subject. Machpoint005
Perhaps they are an ethical company? There are some of those around, mostly very successful.
David Schweizer
I would like to think so, started by Percy Riley, who designed the engines and gearboxes for those wonderful pre-war Riley Cars. When Lord Nuffield bought Rileys 1938, Percy Riley parted company with them, but retained the engine an gearbox manufacturing element, naming his new company as Percy Riley Motors (PRM).
