A good article in Canal Boat magazine

comfortably numb

Featured Posts

Anyone who reads Canal Boat mag would know this already, Shilrley.

And anybody who doesn't isn't likely to find out, as they have adopted the dubious ploy of usually having it on the shelves in a sealed bag - ostensibly to include another freebie magazine or poster, but I rather suspect that in reality it is to stop you flicking through it in W H Smith and realising how content free it generally is!

(That's not meant to be an attack on Canal Boat, by the way, as that would be biased as Waterways World is usually equally content free!

What I'm looking for is a canal magazine that comprises of 3-4 (max) articles on the most picturesque waterways in the UK. A page on how to tinker with a vitus and a new fangled windlass made from titanium and the rest of the magazine made up of adverts for very shiny boats.

Anyone know of one...?

Shock horror! Minority interest magazine does its best to serve it's readers by selling advertising!

How about an esoteric publication that discusses, at great length, such things such as the number of grains of coal dust loaded on boats in the old days? ;) <guilty reader>

What's dubious about putting magazines in plastic bags? That seems sensible to me.

I did notice the comfortably numb boat but wasn't sure if it was yours,. ISTR there are more than 1?

I think there are about 14 registered Comfortably Numb's of which 8 are narrowboats.

As for the article, for those who don't read the mag it's a regular feature called 'me and my boats' where folk talk about boats they've owned or hired over the years. I decided to send something in and got £100 for it.

Some of you are poo pooing those mags but I happen to think they are generally a very good read, especially Canal Boat mag. Naturally there is a small element of 'same old' as it must be hard for them to come up with totally new stuff all the time, but it's the same with whatever type of media.

Take this forum for example. I think it's wonderful and it's the only one I go on, but there's a heck of a lot of crap and inane drivel (as is already happening on this thread, LOL) as well as the really good stuff.

Apart from the dubious bit I can speak first hand that newsagents hate them because plastic on plastic is very slippy and once you have got your display nicely fanned out on the shelves the slightest touch has them sliding about all over the place. This can cause the customer a lot of embarrasment as in the case saw of a chap selecting a "top shelf" magazine who found himself knee deep in them as they all skidded off the shelf.

Many years ago I bought selected a copy of Canal & Riverboat from a newsagent that specialised in the 'top shelf' magazines you mention. The proprietor automatically asked me if I would like it in a paper bag. I remember saying that although C&R often contains a lot of small mistakes, there should not be any big boobs. unsure.png

Quite a sensationalist response to a typo Mike, maybe you should write some headlines for the magazines? Spice it up a bit like!

'WTF is so nice about the llangollen canal?'

'HTF do I change the thermostat on my BMC'

etc.

I'd defo start reading them then!

You're right. A canal mag written in language drawn from the Urban Dictionary would sell by the tonne I bet!!!!!!!!!

If each visit to the forum required me to shell out for quid or thereabouts to see if there was anything there that interested me, I think I would give it up quite quickly!

A feature on cut side graffiti, an exposé on the corruption at the heart of the canal museum or even a name and shame section of kids who spit off bridges..

I have a plan :)

The problem is that there is so much better content out there that's mostly free from blogs and forums. Magazines haven't caught up with the digital age (yet), but they have a unique postion in reviewing stuff and getting hands on multiple items at once to compare. However when they do this like Canal Boat did a few months ago with reviewing multiple fridges, the article had very little information in it and was only a few paragraphs long (but had 2-3 pages!).
