Really nice video thanks for posting.

What a pleasure to see two boats turned out well and loaded manouvering and going through the lock. Great crew too showing the smooth easy action of practised hands who know what they are doing with efficiency and getting the job done faster than most of us would.

Correctly spelt: governor.

Ray, watch how it was done in the 1950's - 14minutes in.

Proper gate paddles. We can but dream of such things these days.

ETA - gates open and paddles up too.

Yes, but not REALLY authentic. The steerer didn't stick it in headgear with 4" of water still left to go. Nor could I see any sign of a large wooden wedge....... The "bosses" were obviously going to see this film!

Them were the days.

Years ago, I steered a trip boat on the Grand Union. At the first lock of the trip I came to, an elderly ex-GUCCC steerer always came out to help me through. Invariably I'd ask him if he'd like a run out, and he nearly always accepted. At that time, "Waterways World" had a flyer printed that read "Watch your wash", which boaters were asked to display in their windows. We passed one boat with one of these on show, and I asked X if he'd ever watched his wash, back in the day. He paused for a nano-second, sucked his teeth and replied, "Aye John, we used to watch it come over the towpath. It gave the bankmen summat to do".

Reprehensible.

Well done MIke, Interested to see someone else's methods.

1.54 I was always taught to slack off for bridges, basically because its quicker, however I can't see what's before the bridge, but if it was a line of moored boats I can see why he was attempting to get the old bolinder warm.

3.36 an excellent example of why you should never assume a bolinder is going to stop for you, especially when she has got cold by slow running previously.

5:13 good technique with the rope on the stud to bring the pair together.

I also note the the butty is illegally loaded according to the public health laws. You are not allowed to pile the cargo up against the forwards bulkhead of the cabin, as this restricts the ventilation of the cabin through the required hatch.
