Can any one identify this little duck who visited our boat last week?

 

Our bird book doesn't help.

Looks like a pillard to me. Thats a cross between a mallard and a pidgeon. I'm told that mallards will bonk anything that flies.

I was thinking Carolina but the throat markings don't look right.

 

Perhaps a Mandarin with the head feathers Brylcreemed flat.

 

Female ducks with flattened feathers and hidden wing flashes can be very tricky.

As soon as I saw it I thought 'female mandarin'

A similar one (or possibly this one) has been around the moorings for some years. Used to visit the linear moorings but may have decided to go up market and stay in the marina.

I thought he/she may have flown away since BWML took over and stopped residential moorings and charges went up..........................
