We spoke to Sarah this afternoon.

She is in good spirits.

Sarah is currently looking to buy a 20 odd foot narrow boat, so the animals can have a little shelter this winter.

I think she may be a bit short on expertise when looking for a boat.

She is looking for something that is legal, floating and weatherproof, the interior doesnt matter.

She needs this cos Ballou, the beautiful Newfoundland is a bit tired and would like a bit of security.

Does anyone know of a boat that may suit?

getting urgent now!

I think her [sensible] reasoning for a steel boat is stability.

The Newfoundland is a bit nervous of boarding a boat.

A plastic boat may tip up when a big down puts his weight on it!

A flat deck would be better for him.

I see he is still wearing the harness!

For the money, a steel boat (especially legal, fit to go and safe) of any size is going to be a hell of a push, one with a tug deck particularly unlikely. All NB's including tugs have steps to get into the cabin in some way or another too. Also, all boats tip somewhat when you get on them, especially smaller ones, even in steel- my boat is steel and 30ft and rocks when you get on.

It is good to hear Sarah is still doing alright but I am very concerned about the Newfie.

I am unsure if the idea of trying to get a boat would be ideal for Baloo. The fact he is such a big dog and is getting increasngly unsteady on his feet means that he is likely to struggle big time getting on and off a boat (even more so as he has not learned how to do it while he was younger)

I fear he could end up inside a boat and be unable to get back up the steps to get out again (and there is no way any single human being would be able to help much when a dog is that large without potentially doing themselves a mischief) Worse he could end up trying to get on or off a boat and slipping into the water.

I suspect the lab and the cat would be fine but if Baloo is on his last legs (excuse the awful pun - there is no place for humour here) what heppens when he is no longer around. Sarah might go on to enjoy her travels on a little boat with the lab and cat in tow. I think we would all feel happier if she also had a proper roof over her head even if it was a very inexpensive GRP one. If that is what she would like to do with herself then it would be worth considering but I don't feel it is a decision she should make based around giving Baloo comfort because I think it unlikely he will manage it.

I really feel for her. everyone who has ever had a dog will know what it is like when your best friend is getting old and can't keep up with life. I suspect living the life she has been doing will mean that Baloo means even more to her than our own pets mean to us (if that is possible)

As much as I hate to say this there comes a time when anyone who has dogs knows that you have to make compromises in your own life to ensure the dog is not in any discomfort. If you are unable to offer the dog the security and comfort they need in their old age then you need to try and find someone who can perhaps offer the old fella a nice centrally heated home with some nice soft carpet on the floor to live out the remander of his life in comfort.

I cannot imagine Sarah wanting to part with Baloo but I cannot imagine her wanting to give up the nomadic life she chooses. It is a tough time for her and I can understand how she might think a small boat might be an ideal option but my personal feeling is that maybe she is just clutching at straws.

I don't know what the answer is? I assume she is still able to get vetinary treatment as she travels - I wonder if Baloo is on any medication for his arthiritis or even if that would be prudent in the circumstances?

I complained to our GP about my nocturnal rolling activities and he prescribed Viagra. He said forget all of the notions about it improving your libido as it's simply designed to prevent you from rolling out of bed.........

Certainly works for me!

Sort of like a kick stand for humans. biggrin.png

Just started reading this thread. What an amazing lady.

Yes a much better option - caravans don't sink and do not usually need a licence or other certification like insurance or BSS

Well if anybody has a scrap of land she can put it on I have a caravan she can borrow for as long as she wants and can knock up a suitable ramp too.

I suspect it's likely she wants a boat so that she can continue to move following the canals, even if she has to bow haul it. With 3k to play with I would be surprised if the idea of a cheap caravan hasn't crossed her mind already but been ruled out due to having no means to move it and having to hole up in one place for the duration of the time she is needs to be in it.

I spoke to her on Saturday.

The caravan idea sounds good to me, but who am I to judge?

Its a pity someone hasnt got an empty boat she could use [maybe one needing a refit?]

Fingers crossed.

Hi Cheshire Rose.

Sarah was talking about the possibility of hauling a boat!

She had spoken to someone at Golden Nook Farm moorings who had a little 20 odd footer for sale, but people had spoken to her about the possible pitfalls of a cheap boat!

Well if I had listened to everyone during my lifetime, I would never have done anything!

The ideal scenario would be for her to spend what little dosh she has, on a boat, if thats what she wants.

I am sure a ramp, floor modification etc, could be made by nice people for nowt!

There must be a 22ft mini narrow boat about somewhere? for the right price.

For those who dont know.

Sarah isnt a basket case!

She is a young woman undertaking a journey.

sometimes in life we may make a journey for a reason other than to go from A to B.

She is independent and chose this life, hopefully the dogs and cat are happy with the decision.

Whether she is right or wrong, I dont honestly know.

but as I said earlier,Who am I to judge?

Hi all.

Been a lurker for some time, however this thread has inspired me to dip my toe in the water (see what I did there?clapping.gif ).

I know this one is a bit far away for the lady in question, but I think something similar might be an option, as I believe these are the more stable of the GRP tubs.
