    Floods?

Thank you for explanation Matty. A kind of refuge then? Hopefully, now that the levels have come down I'll be able to get the old girl out on the river this weekend, (heat exchanger permitting, but that's another story). I felt a bit sorry for the hire boaters trapped at Sawley during the hgh water, all loaded up and with no where to go. Thanks again! Bostin.

    Floods?

I have only just had a chance to drag these off my phone. This was the scene on the Soar during the floods at Redhill. I might be being dim, however how the does the flood lock there work? The flow just seems to go round it where the moorings are, and doesn't seem to restrict the level the other side. Bostin.
  4. Mines a Birchwood 22 with Penta AQ115 (2.0 Volvo B22 Petrol 115HP when new) with an outdrive (270/280???). I have been really happy with it and is just right for me, the wife and the two dogs!! Appears to be very well built, and handles really well for an outdrive. I did consider fitting a rudder extension early on, however I've found that once you get use to it, it's fine. If I ever get the time I'll condiser taking her up Trent to try her in some saltwater. The video below is some nutter who has strapped a high power outboard to a 22. It's shows was tough little hull it is!! This is us on a more gentle cruise. (sorry about the soundtrack lol) Bostin!!
  5. I went through this lock on Tuesday. The cill can be seen in this video, I took at the time. (excuse the dirty windows). The bottom gate can be a bugger to get moving from the fully open position, on occasion. Bostin.
  6. Not sure this will be ready for April, but maybe a future consideration............... http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/exciting-coventry-canal-marina-scheme-7501787 Bostin!
  7. I do hope nobody here was affected by this. Why can't these di&*@%eads pick on themselves, instead of innocent businesses and boaters? http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/vandals-smash-up-coventry-canal-7392247 Bostin.
  8. Blimey, I would have been in seventh heaven then! or ninth! Here's a couple of poor quality vids of me driving a pair of scale locos made by my mates Robin and Ray in their back garden. Robin is a bit of a Fred Dibnar type. Bostin. Edited to add:- Bargemast, I could see myself cruising the Trent/Soar in that..................lovely!!
  9. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=712_1400869715 As an engineer I love this. Enjoy your bank holiday all!! Bostin.
  10. Some real (not) bargains in here. I have reported several of them, and started a thread in their boats section in the hope no one gets caught out. Shame as it affects the genuine advertisers. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/non-motoring/boats-boats-boats/boats-and-boating
  11. Do you reckon it would be safe to drink after? I can't be only one who thought that, or do I need to see a councillor? Bostin! EDIT :- Misread it as 'brewers' yeast. I'll retire back to my bottle book.
  12. My pair seem to be coping! Obviuosly not liveaboard.....................yet (lol)................. this could be my back up plan!
  13. You've got onto the 'Angry People in Local Newspapers' site. lol Editor wants to know what you've got nailed to your boat!! And a girl called Sarah has left you a comment. http://apiln.blogspot.co.uk/ P.S. Thanks for all the good work you do do to keep this part of our City looking good, despite the morons who want to do otherwise. There's a pint in bank for you if I see you around. Kevin.
  14. Seems to work for me. 15. What Barometers Do A barometer simply measures air pressure – expressed in millibars or inches. An aneroid barometer displays the reading by means of dial and a needle, whereas a mercury barometer uses the height of liquid mercury within a glass tube. We now more commonly use digital barometers which, would you believe, have a digital display! Since changes in air pressure accompany changing weather, these instruments can be used to help forecast local weather some 24-48 hours in advance. Making a Weather Forecast The notes on the barometer face (RAIN, CHANGE etc) are broad indications and less important than the actual pressure change. Regular observation will quickly lead to a greater understanding of weather patterns. Generally: - Increasing Pressure (movement of the needle in a clockwise direction) suggests improving weather, associated with a HIGH or "anti-cyclonic" pressure system. - Decreasing Pressure (movement of the needle in an anti-clockwise direction) suggests deteriorating weather, associated with a LOW or “cyclonic” pressure system. - Steady Pressure, typical of extended fine weather periods, suggests more of the same. To observe the trend on an Aneroid barometer, the movable pointer is turned so that it sits directly above the barometer needle. Later (perhaps 6 hours for an easily-identifiable change), the barometer glass is tapped gently and the direction of movement of the needle noted. On electronic meters the trends are normally recorded for reference anyway so easy peasy, and they often give a graphical history/forecast. Hope this helps.
  16. Hello Matt. Do you frequent NW or TWO by any chance? Today is really getting rather blowey, LP appears a little deeper than forecast. This link show the grand scheme of things! http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/1000hPa/orthographic=-13.53,46.52,594 We need to also keep an eye on 28/12/13 when we might have this lttle baby over us.

  21. Hi all. Just a note to introduce myself after brief dip into the Lady and 2 dogs and a cat thread. Having had some (very little) experience at NB's from hiring and spending some time on the Cheshire ring, me and SWMBO decided to buy our first one to see how we went. As this is our first boat, and due to financial constraints (didn't want to go the full hog and invest 25--30k if turns out it's not for us), we bought a Birchwood 22 (8'2" beam). I have to say after approx 3 months of ownership we are completly addicted, and spend as much time as possible on the boat and spend most weekends on her at Sawley. We have had couple of foray's out on the Trent, and my confidence is slowly picking up (although a tub with an outdrive is a little bit of handful at slow speed compared the a NB, which came as a surprise...lol.) I think the two main reasons we have become addicted is the unique ability of this pastime to completely relax you and allow switch off from anxiety and worries of modern life, and the other being the fantasic people we have met and made friends with. I thought I would share a couple of vids of our second outing. Me giving SWMBO a lesson (like I'm an expert!!) Me driving and SWMBO having a discussion with the dogs! Anyway, that's enough about us, hopefully see you around the forum!! P.S. Just one quick tale from the earlier stages choosing a boat:- Picture me and the wife looking at various purchase options for our new hobby, when she spots a boat she likes, however she is none too keen on the name. Mrs says "Can we change the name of a boat?" I say "Sure love, you can call anything you like........... why don't we name it after the dogs 'Milly and Fudge'?" Mrs says "Oooh that's a bit mouthfull!!.......Can't we just shorten it to 'MILF'? At this point I'm on the floor crying and she hasn't got clue why. So I explain the situation, where I then get the silent treatment for a few hours after being then accused of looking at smut, seeing as I know what it means!! I'm not sure all of you will get his..lol
  22. Hi all. Been a lurker for some time, however this thread has inspired me to dip my toe in the water (see what I did there? ). I know this one is a bit far away for the lady in question, but I think something similar might be an option, as I believe these are the more stable of the GRP tubs. http://www.bwml.co.uk/marinas/sawley_marina/brokerage/sm_9036_taffy Kevin.
