Boater Cats

Since I asked where was the thread on Boater Cats and was challenged to start one, here goes!

My son and his family have two female half-Siamese (but coal black!) kittens, who were born on November 5th last year. One of them lives on the boat with my son whenever he is there and the other lives with his wife and kids, but visits the boat occasionally. Their names are Muppet - the kids' kitten - and Noodles - son's kitten. (The kids chose both their names, so least said ... )

Noodles hadn't been a boat cat for very long before she had her first 'dip'. Unfortunately, she chose to fall in while my son was listening to a CD on headphones, so he had no idea how long she was swimming up and down beside the boat, looking for a way to get out, before he took off the headphones and heard her yelling loudly - as Siamese do! She was certainly exhausted by the time he pulled her out! Luckily, she seemed no worse for the experience when she had recovered her strength, and she has (so far) avoided falling in again.

Anyway, here's a couple of pictures.

This is our lovely cat Bellamy, he's a 2 year old moggy. He's lived aboard for a few months now.

He's a bit suspicious of the water. He went for a swim once (my fault, but at least I was there to make sure he was OK  He managed to get himself out ok, which was reassuring.

He doesn't mind the engine, and quite likes watching out of the windows when we're on the move. We've not yet been brave enough to let him out while away from the mooring though, so that'll be a whole new hurdle for us :)

Oh god that window's filthy! I couldn't reach the outside of the top pane from indoors, and am a lazy scrote! Apple oggies.

Lovingly called Mogster George, he enjoys, sleeping, eating and watching antiques programmes on TV.

Lurcher Food !!!! (only joking)

This is a pose often adopted by Lurchers, though with legs stretched right out, and is known as "roaching"

Sindbad - Cat on the outside, Dog on the inside. Can swim and has done many times. Lives in the saloon when the fire is on or on the bed when it's off. Eats grapes and any meat. Hates salmon. Will withstand about 30 seconds of belly tickles before arm attack. After three years the concept of 'a tail' still confuses him.

I hate say it Dave but he sits in the cratch and anything doggy that even approaches him is told in no uncertain terms they are not welcome.

We have heard of a deerhound lurcher that has killed two cats right in front of the owners, which was truly horrific for everyone concerned.

Cats will scare off most dogs, and if that fails can outrun/out manoeuvre them. The problem is that when they encounter a lurcher these things don't always apply. We have tried to train Sophie really well and she has been ok with cats so far, but if we spot a cat we still get her onto the lead just to be sure. I think a cat should always have a good route to get into the boat in an emergency, I don't like it when they need the owner to open the door to let them in.

We rehomed ours when we moved onto the boat and I still feel a bit bad about this, but everytime we see a notice about a lost cat I am glad that we did, but then we did have the daftest and most un-coordinated cats I have ever known.

So thaaat's why Sinbad didn't touch mums special salmon treat she bought for him! :-D He's the best though!

He still loves that toy that you got him though, but yes, he walks away from salmon, grapes or orange segments on the other hand...

Tried to post a pic of our cats, the image is hosted at Googles picasa site and the forum software said ''not allowed to post that image extension on this board'' or something like that. Anyone any idea whats wrong ?

Try checking to see if your picture on Google Picasa has a "direct link" URL option, if it does then that should work. I had similar problems with my pics on Image Shack until I finally found it hidden amongst the email link, forum link, etc.

Hope you succeed.

Ahhh, a Bengal cat. Just about the only thing noisier than a Siamese cat. :D

Oh boy, yes! I have two Burmese and two Bengals at home (one of the Bengals is a blue-eyed Snow Spotted like your Milton, Oarfish and the other is a Blue Marbled) and the Bengals shout and yell all day long! Plus they're totally mental! I have no idea why anybody would 'invent' such a crazy breed! (OK, they are beautiful, and we fell in love with them when we first saw them, but if we had known what they were like .... :help:)

Sorry, they don't live on, or even visit the boat, so .... :smiley_offtopic::blush:

Working in practice, the only thing that pees off a vet nurse more than having a Siamese inpatient is having a Bengal inpatient. :D

My parents have always had Siamese cats- I looked after one of theirs for a bit but try as I might I never really got to grips with her neuroticism.

The vets and staff who cared for Casper. our Siamese, thought he was FAB, we and they were sorry when he had to be put down last November (the big C).

Holly (another Chocolate point) came to live with us early in December, she is nearly 3 now, but had a poor start in life (we got her on a rescue basis), having been caged for most (all) of the time. She was barely socialised, had dreadful teeth and spent a few months indoors with us.

We let her run free for the first time in her life several months ago. She is a wonderful cat and always uses the same area of our garden to go to the loo.

She is the most talkative Siamese we have had (4 of them).

She can't understand rain and hates getting wet, not sure how she will cope with snow.

I don't think she would like boating ... when we go away a 'relly' comes to cat sit..

Spoilt.....Mmm - but that what pets are for.

Leo.
