Braunston Historic Narrowboat Rally 25th-26th June

Thanks Dave, people need to realize that waterways traditions arent just about types of boat, roses & castles etc but about the way of life and how it was conducted. I do wish these people would learn about the heritage they choose to play or live on before condemning practices that have evolved out of that very heritage, I wonder if Romarni123 and others ever wonder WHY BW still put strapping posts on lock gates - thats assuming they know what they are!

Yes I am quite interested in the history of the canals, but I guess it is people with an attitude like yours that ensure I do my research on the internet. What a pompous person you are.

Genuinely cannot remember when I have had so much fun! A BIG thank-you to Joe Fuller for letting me tag along on on Ibex, well and truly fallen in love with the boat!

Editted to add 'the boat', that could have started some rumours!

Oh and Alan, Sickle look sublime, makes my heart melt every time I see her, sure you have not had enough of her yet.....?

Anyone got a list of the boats attending?

Haven't seen one, and don't think I'd like to attempt a full list, as I really never did get round the whole site to see what was there.

And many, moored 4 or 5 abreast, you just couldn't see what they were.....

I know it was an event specialising in FMC, but I will attempt to list "known" GUCCCo (and Erewash) boats, which I know rather better....

(Additions corrections, please!....)

Aquila

Archimes and Ara

Callisto

Capricorn

Casseopeia

Corona

Dorado

George

Mimas

Phobos

Radiant & Regulus

Sagitta

Sickle

Southern Cross

Vesta

Victoria

Barrow

Buckden

Chertsey

Carnaby

Darley

Fulbourne & Angel

Greenock & Bordesley

Nuneaton & Brighton

Nutfield

Purton

Renfrew & Betelgeuse

Stamford

Stanton

Towcester & Bideford

Whitby

Dodona

Thea

Cyprus & Cedar (Corrected after my silly mistake pointed out!)

I think I make that 42 ?

I have NOT included boats like Toucan, Kelso, Dover, or anything at Roger Farringdon's yard that was present at Braunston, but not actively taking part - I think it by including some of these that people have been able to push their estimates so high ?

Anybody like to try for a list of FMC boats, or any of the many "others" ?

No, not yet!

Good start, (better than I could have done!) for an FMC list, so I will play - some additions, then.....

(I make that 28, not including "not taking part" ?

So 42 Grand Unions and 28 FMC gives us 70, before we look for omissions, and all the others attending, (there were three Cowburn and Cowpar, for instance....)

The ones I remember seeing were:

Australia

Bream (Back end only)

Cactus

Columbia

Clover (from Richardhula)

Cormorant (or parts of it at least)

Cypress? (Didn't see it, but that counts for nowt - I didn't see Perch either from the other list!)

Dory

Dove

Empress

Emu

Fazeley

Hare

Ibex

Jaguar

Kangaroo

Kestrel

Kildare

Lamprey

Ling (Yes)

Marquis (Yes)

Owl

Plover (from Richardhula)

President

Stafford

Tasmania

Tench

Verbena

Present not taking part....

Clent

France

Madeley

Monarch ?

EDITED to correct some appalling arithmetic!

Jim as in Jim Taylor?

Yep, that's the chap!

He was with someone called Mike whose surname I didn't ask. They were on Empress. It was one or the other who texted me Sue's details (including the spelling of her name) but I can't remember which.

The official (HNBOC) figure, from the horses mouth, was 109. To be included they had to be there overnight on saturday.

Do they publish a list, eventually ?

I'm thinking that must include all historic boats present at Braunston, rather than just those actively parading.

Someone pointed out the complete absence ofany of the post nationalisation built craft like Rivers and Admirals at any of the recent events. It's quite true, I can't recall any at all. Why is that, I wonder ?

She certainly didn't seem concerned about it yesterday!..........

Yes and what a lovely boat. Paradoxically I took it to be an RW Davis from your previous photo then I noticed the name and thought 'hang on, that's the real thing!

Makes you realise how good the RW Davis copies are, dunnit....

A few pictures from us - not easy to take so many this year, though.....

Excellent restoration/rebuilding of "Mimas"

DSCF4373.jpg

Textbook perfect bringing a pair under the Ladder Bridge

IMG_0841.jpg

Not so textbook perfect - attempting the same thing!

IMG_0844.jpg

The immaculately just painted "Admiral" with an impressive load on - "Tench" also well loaded behind.

IMG_0863.jpg

Tugs were already moored 6 abreast when Mike Askin with "Victoria" decided to make it 7 abreast

IMG_0915.jpg

Typical line up of Grand Union boats - "Chertsey" to the outside

DSCF4396.jpg

Edging forward past several groups of such boats.....

DSCF4397.jpg

"Fulbourne" reverses "Angel" round the turn

DSCF4418.jpg

And Chertsey follows with a nice plume of Petter smoke.....

The full cabined rear half of an FMC butty came through on yesterday's afternoon parade, named 'Forward' (IIRC) but going backwards, though I'd not seen it at any other point over the weekend.

I think I may have been mistaken in seeing Cypress. Was a bit disappointed not to see Planet and Gilbert as I know they are moored at Stoke Bruerne at the moment. To be fair, it can be hard to drag yourself away from the Boat Inn sometimes :)

Gutted that my camera stopped working on Saturday morning, some lovely pics taken, I'm hoping someones got one of me on the back of Ibex...

But the best boat IMO apart from Mimas must surely have been FMC Eagle

I seriously hope you are having a laugh!

Whatever it is that RWD "copy" to claim validity as a Northwich look-alike, nobody has ever been able to tell us, or produce a picture of the equivalent "real thing".

It certainly isn't any Yarwoods build "Grand Union" type, whether "Small", "Middle" or "Large" Northwich, (being about as close to them as an SMH is to a Josher!)
