Chertsey will be there of course. Still incognito - but now with gunnels! Already got eight passengers for the parade.

Gunnels are spelt Gunwhales a much more interesting word.Cheers Max

I like to use Nelsons spelling not the American version.

Its lazy to use your boat to open the gates, what if everyone did it why not just open them the normal way you say you do it with care and you might well do but not everyone would or for that matter does, you wouldnt knock the safety lock( Pawl ) off to drop the paddles on the Atherstone locks so they are being lazy sods,You may well drop the paddle using your hand but why not use a windlass it takes about the same amount of time.it might be a practice thats been around a long time but it dont make it a good practice

Many things were done to make BW shudder. I have seen Claytons coming up the Wolverhampton 21 with a long thick tapered piece of wood. Bump the top gate and drop it down the gap to allow the water to gush in. Don't do it you naughty boys, and girls.

The boat hardly stopped.

I remember "young" Charlie Atkins telling me about this practice, although I have never done myself of course.

Update on the Braunston show......

My copy of HNBOC Newsletter has just dropped on the mat, (complete with a very nice front cover photo of Sickle, which rather please me!), and they have published their claimed list of boats they counted as "attending".....

They say 109.

I'm not going to argue the toss about whether some of these took any part, but here is (I hope transcribed correctly) their list of 109 boats.....
