How did I do that Ive done it again.. gets coat Edited March 22, 2010 by soldthehouse

matty40s
hey, it was long shorts weather this weekend just gone This time last year I was sunbathing, sorry, enjoying the sun, in Braunston and had been out cruising for 3 weeks. I then did the Leicester ring, which was short of water, prior to Easter.
mayalld
I don't regard that as "harm". well, in our case, the disturbed sleep was rather unhelpful. We had to be up for 8am, and as such had no opportunity to make up for the lost sleep, which made yesterday something of a write-off. I would say that seething summed up my feelings on the events. To all intents, they robbed me of half my weekend. Joining the party wasn't really an option, as we wanted to get to sleep, and had things planned for the following day that were rather higher on the priority list than a party with seriously crap music. Some people have also suggested that as long as the gate was put back, no harm was done. Perhaps the question is "why is there a locked gate there?" Gates are there to prevent vehicles being driven into areas where they are likely to cause damage to the site.
ambuvanner
I think only assholes leave sh1t on the floor...and that's just the dogs. Having just completed a trip from Anderton down to Autherley,a lot of the towpath is in a disgusting state left by morons like the OP talked about. mayalld
I know this wont be the most popular view but I can take it, we don't know if the people left their rubbish, and maybe they re- swung the gates (I may be wrong) so from the OP all we can see is that their noise was the problem. I understand that it could ruin your peace and right to sleep, but you are as mobile as them, I also think that you could of spoken to them, most people will only kick off if they feel threatened, In my yoof and even sometimes now we have been responsible for some pretty big outdoor parties that don't quite comply with the law, our methods has always been to talk to the locals, offer them an invite and if they don't come bung em a bottle of whisky. Never had a complaint yet! It was 10:30 at night when we realised that there was a potential problem, and I didn't fancy unmooring and moving on. Given that we were going to be leaving the boat unattended the next day, and given that their party had demonstrated a complete lack of consideration for others, I felt that any approach was likely to lead to our boat being at risk of reprisals. Fair enough, I wasn't there, and I dont think you are being unreasonable, Just that in my experiance that most of the people I have feared the most have turned out to be great. Also, I have no grounds to complain about noise based on my past. Just to add that If I ever disturb anybody with noise then please tell me, then I know! david and julie
I reckon you handled the situation in the most sensible way you could - anyone taking on several inconsiderate people, especially when they've been drinking, would definately be courting trouble. Its all well and good debating the rights and wrongs of a liberal society but you don't want to be doing it with a bottle hanging from your neck. Paul Not so much ignoring them as chosing to do nothing immediately. My view was, and remains that their lack of consideration for the location and their fellow boaters was such that unless something is done, they will do this again. Now, the boat was fairly new, still only part fitted, so (charitably) I will assume that they are new to boating, and simply haven't understood what is and is not acceptable. So, I have written to BW, to report the incident, and asked that they write to the owner of the boat to offer them advice
kiki
I think you did the right thing Dave, but missed a golden opportunity to start Jinks up at 8.00, set Popye and Jasper out to have a little Barkfest and perhpas have shouted a few cheery greetings at our mates across the other side. People who are inconsiderate in the wee hours, generally dont ever expect anyone to actually do it back to them. But I reckon confrontation is not what you want at 10.30 at night anyhow. Hopefully next time we will be there as well, and you know how patient and long suffering I am. Might be tempted to bring Lola for the weekend. In the end, though, its not worth risking your boat or your safety.

luctor et emergo
8am is the accepted time at which engine running is allowed. Accepted by a majority. Sometimes the only way to teach somene how to behave is to show them how it feels. 8 in the mornng is not an unacceptable time to be up and about and if by accident you wake up the oik who kept you awake without any consideration for you until 2 in the mornng. Perhpas it would meet with your exacting standards if say, there was not another boat within miles....might that be OK - honestly no wonder idiots walk all over some guys, stand up for yourself why dont you. As it happens, the occupiers of all the boats who had been affected were up and about at 8am, so the question of people who wanted a lie in wouldn't arise (apart from those on the offending boat, and I'm not sure that they were deserving of any particular consideration here)

mayalld
So did you get any photos of the vans and rubbish to back up your incident report to BW? Yes. So they were not that badly affected by it then. Like me, they hadn't had a lot of sleep, and were tired. Surely you have experienced the phenomenon where your sleep has been disturbed, such that even when the disturbance stops, you still can't settle.
